I'm currently an Air Force ROTC cadet so my opinions are different as for I'm commissioning in 3 years as an officer, but as a history major I could tell you that it goes back to basically the Monroe Doctrine, the Roosevelt Cordially ( I think that's the right word- I'm terrible @ spelling!), and the Truman Doctrine. But the U.S. doesn't always policemen or women in my case, there are plenty of times that the U.S. didn't. And also I still believe that the United States Armed Forces are and should always be 100% volunteer, hey I should know! As for me I come from a long proud military lineage & I'm not in a mood to debate politics anymore
Hope this answer your question.

Troops of any age die when they choose to join the armed services of their country. Many people from other countries have died or been wounded in the service. And hundreds of thousands have been hurt by bombs and mines, no one should be happy about all this terror. No matter the nationality.
The people have suffered enough, our own should come home and as part of the defense dept. and defend the country. rebuild our country, help our people, there are floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and other disasters to keep us all busy for eternity.

No one is obligated to sell oil to the US. They can sell it to whoever they want. I know the Chinese need for and dependency on oil is growing rapidly. We have plenty of oil in the country and in the Gulf so there really isn't a need to worry about it. We are moving towards alternative fuel and electric vehicles also.

Because our goverment makes money on being the police of the world. I say let Isreal, and palistine kill each other, let the Sunni's Kurds and Shiites kill each other,
and let North and south Korea kill each other.
It time we worry about letting them fight off there arguments and taking care of our own problems here at home!
besides I am sure when the world has had enough of killing themselves they might actually come to some piece agreements!

You almost make it sound like the rest of the world is MAKING the US play policeman. When, in reality, it is a self-imposed title. And as far as the oil thing goes...the US has enough domestic oilfields to support itself for the next 100 years and beyond...but it is cheaper and easier to buy it from foreign sources. And it also allows for their to be a 'reserve' in the event a worldwide catastrophy occurs...the US will ALWAYS have oil.

i don't believe the US plays policemen for the world. the UN does that. however (except for iraq) we send troops where the UN ask us to. no american should have died in the world trade center, or the airplanes that were hijacked, but they did.

Well, I for one have learned my lesson, which is "to hell with the rest of the world", so you liberals just don't come to me about what's going on in Darfur or Somalia, and let's get the UN out of NYC and move it someplace where they give a damn what the UN thinks, and don't ask me to care about the rainforests, and don't tell me what France thinks about gay marriage and such matters, and don't ask me to care about child-labor sweatshops in China.
We can't be part isolationist any more than we could be partly free. It's all or nothing.

Only certain places. There has to be monitary motivation for them to police a place. Otherwise, Rowanda genocide would not have happened and the Darfur situation would not be going on now.

We hate evil and love freedom! At least most courageous Americans do. I can't speak for the cowardly controllers who fear everything from donuts to pickup trucks.

Why does the US think they're the world's policeman? DAMN THOSE AMERICANS!
Why isn't the US solving that problem? DAMN THOSE AMERICANS!
Rinse.. repeat..
