I have thought about parking my cars on both sides of the street opposite each other, thereby reducing the width of the street. There is no sidewalk on my street, so that worries me about pedestrian safety

1. make police report after police report till they target your street with a sitting cop or a digital speed sign.

2. I wouldn't' park the cars like that, just gives more blind spots for kids to hide behind and not see oncoming cars themselves.

3. In an upscale neighborhood near me, I have seen parents go to a sign store and get signs made up, bout 3 times the size of a Realtor sign. States like " CHILDREN AT PLAY 15 MPH " with picture of kids running with a ball. Several parents have done this all next to each other and across from each other, it has become a mini school zone.

Could also do the same but put the sign on a post and put it in a large orange pylon cone. Even put several of them at the end of your drive way so it gets attention and maybe they will think its construction, metal plate in road, etc.

4. Can sit in on city council meetings and voice your opinion. Ask or petition to have a speed bump put in, to have " caution, kids at play, slow down, 15 mph " painted on the street at each end as a warning.

5. Stand out in the road yourself with a construction type reflective vest on holding a sign like a crossing guard, " slow down and stop ". After a week of being stopped, bothered, speeders will look for another short cut to take, as this one now has a speed bump.

Call the city. A street near me was like that and they put up a stop sign just to get force people to slow down. Now they can get people for 2 tickets speeding and running the stop sign. After a few months people dont speed anymore on that road.

I would not advise "narrowing" the street, the risk of someone hitting one or both of your cars is not worth it. I also agree that by doing so, you are creating more "hiding" places for your children and other neighborhood kids to not be seen or see cars.... in today's twisted legal system, don't leave room for ANY liability on your part. This also includes anything on or near the road that could potentially distract or disable a motorists right of way.

I totally respect your plight and agree that people simply need to slow down in residential areas. Unfortunately, the Police can't really do much unless THEY see someone breaking the law... especially in the case of a motor vehicle complaint. Keep working with your city council, and DO continue to keep records of what make, model and license plate # of the vehicles that speed in front of your residence.

Another tidbit of info that would help is the posted speed on your street as that will help us gauge what kind of road it is.

If you are worried about your children being hit by drivers on your street, then talk to your kids. You can't control traffic anywhere even if you are a traffic cop. People drive more wreckless these days than ever.. That's like asking how can you let your kids fly and control terrorists, or how can you let your kids goto school and enforce gun control... focus on being a parent and not the outside world. I have a cat that obeys me and walks with and without a leash around my house and people stop their cars because they are amazed.. when you instill education and rules with your children, you both can relax and be safe.

Down My Street

I live on a corner street and fully sympathize with you. My friend painted a piece of plywood white, and wrote on it in red lettering: "Show some class, Slow Down!"
It's attached to the street sign very low (not blocking anyone's view driving) and it has seemed to work...although late at night and the few idiots still go screaming through there!
Around my area, the police don't have the time, resources to watch for speeders...okay, that's their excuse!

Definitely talk to your city council. Bring this up to them. Try and get some of your neighbors to bring this up with you too. Chances are they have the same feelings. Power in numbers!

Perhaps you can get those huge speed bumps put in, or those traffic speed controllers! GL

Talk with your local police and a city councilor.

Under no circumstances should you take it upon yourself to put anything in the road, as one person suggested. You are not authorized to put cones or anything else out there. Also, save your money on those silly "Slow" signs that feature a cartoon character. "Children At Play" signs are NOT effective. Their only purpose is to give you a false sense of security.

You can buy orange cones at WalMart. Just place a few cones out there to alert drivers that there are kids out there and they need to slow down. You can also post a sign out there that just says SLOW CHILDREN. Speedy drivers have always been a problem. I feel for you, I've been in this situation before.

Well get one of those signs that say "SLOW children are at play" or just as all of the other pplz said, call the cops and report speeding. they will send patroll guys to watch out 4 them. just make shure to keep ur kids away from that area. and i dont think you should park your car on the street to block the speeders. it could resolve to

1. They are going so fast they will hit ur car and TOATAL it.
and
2. They could go so fast, try to avoid the car and then they willl swerve into ur lawn and maby hit ur house

tat would be bad. so b carefull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
