You should have been given this information, and more, by you doctor or the clinic where you will have the test done. A Pap test can be done in a doctor’s office, a clinic, or a hospital. While a woman lies on an exam table, the clinician inserts a speculum into her vagina to widen it. A sample of cells is taken from the cervix with a wooden scraper and/or a small cervical brush. The specimen (or smear) is placed on a glass slide and preserved with a fixative, or is rinsed in a vial of fixative, and is sent to a laboratory for examination. A woman should have this test when she is not menstruating; the best time is between 10 and 20 days after the first day of the last menstrual period. If her period starts on the day of the test, she should call the doctor right away and reschedule the appointment. For about 2 days before a Pap test, she should avoid douching or using vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams, or jellies (except as directed by a physician). These may wash away or hide abnormal cells. Also, a woman should not have sexual intercourse for 1 to 2 days before a Pap test, because this may cause unclear results. After the test, she can go back to her normal activities and return to work right away.

I had cervical cancer, now I'm better 100% the pap test didn't detect cancer but it did show abnormal cells which indicated that I should be tested further to see if the cells were cancerous. a lot of times the cells can be treated so that they don;t become cancerous. I went through cryotherapy a couple of times unsuccessfully so then I had to have an operation to remove a layer of the cervix. that was completely successful and I was up and about the next day after my surgery feeling fantastic. that was 2 years ago. Abnormal paps don't mean you have cancer but they do indicate that maybe it.s worth checking out just to make sure. pap tests make sure that cervical cancer is one of the most sucessfully treated cancers out there because they can give such such an early detection. i go regularly for my pap tests because if there are abnormal cells then they can be totally caught in time. cryotherapy is propbably spelt wrong but its where cells are frozen out. not much to it. mild pain and only takes a few minutes out of my life. hope this helps.

A pap alone cannot always tell you if you have cancer. To check for certain types of cancer they may do a HPV test which combined with the pap can give very accurate results. They ususally only do HPV testing after numerous abnormal paps, younger women (under 30) do not always get an HPV test because it fights itself off better the younger you are, theoretically.

Should do, they brush a little of the cells off and then look at them under a microscope.
