a similar thing happened to me. i have only struggled for 3 years, 6 years must be unbearable. i have migraines everyday and have to modify my life style and have also been to neurologists and headache specialists across the North East with no success. the best relief I've had personally is with Topamax and Amerge, however i still get them frequently. one of my specialists told me about a new possible treatment for migraineurs who can't find relief with conventional medication. here is some information:
"Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is a condition where a small hole exists between the right and left atria (upper chambers of the heart), allowing some blood flow from the right to left side of the heart. In the last several years, doctors have noted that a significant number of people who have had PFO closure for health reasons other than migraines have reported a reduction in frequency, or elimination of migraine attacks.* For this reason, further knowledge on the relationship between PFO and migraine is being sought."
http://www.premiumtrial.com/patient.html
It's a clinical trial with a device that is already FDA approved for the treatment of PFO, it's just not FDA approved to be marketed for migraine. I was interested because these people who were being treated had such a decrease in migraine attacks. It's worth looking into. I am in the process now. It's free, but you don't get paid.

I've been there myself and have worked with others in similar situations. You mention specialists. Were any of them true Migraine specialists? Neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine specialists. The biggest change in my health and in that of others I've worked with has been accomplished by seeing a true Migraine specialist.
Also, if he takes anything for the pain more than 2 or 3 days a week, that can make things worse by causing headaches called medication overuse or rebound headaches. Plus, preventive medications often won't work if you're in a rebound cycle.
Without more information, it's difficult to make specific recommendations. One thing to do is see if he knows what triggers his Migraines. Also, he should be sure he's getting the proper amount of good quality sleep. That can be a huge problem.
Good luck to your friend.

I have constant headaches or migraines. I have to take Topamax for the headaches. I been examine as well and they couldn't find what was wrong with me. I even fainted from really bad headache.
Did you try put the person in room and close all the blinds and turn off the lights in the room? That seems to help me with my migraines.
Lights, Sounds, & certain Smells: can cause Headaches
Get the person from these factors and they should see their slowly go away.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy, YOG and Ayurved, but how can you manage pl see.
Good sleep, sweet foods & fruits and avoiding spicy, stale, bakery foods, late sleeping and alcohole will help.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.

Headaches can be caused by minor problems
like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons
like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can
have harmful side effects, so it is better to
modify your lifestyle. More information available at
