There are several factors that can contribute to it not looking the way you want it to after getting color added.

It depends on the skill of the artist who orginally did the tattoo and the skill of the artist who's adding to it (if they are different), it depends on the color and density of the shading. If you add color to the existing shading you might end up with something muddy looking.

Is it really light where you can see your skin color through it? Is it dark enough that you can't?

When in doubt, visit a reputable tattoo studio and ask someone.

it depends on how the tattoo was shaded and what color you want it to be. many times an artist will shade something with black and then go back over it with one color and the shaded part will be a bit darker but all in the same color family, if that makes any sense. so it is likely that what you want can be achieved. check with your artist.

The color is usually added
after the outline and shading
is done. So, I don't see a problem.
Check it out, with the person
doing your work. Ink On

I'm know that you can put a skin tone over black color. My brother-in-law foolishly had his first girlfriends' name tattooed and it became a problem later on with other girls. So he had it covered with his skin color.

Yes, after a while (one year-ish) you can get white ink over the black, then you can put red/blue/whatever over the white. Takes a few sessions and it may hurt a bit more but it is possible.

Look at ''Lucky Diamond Rich's'' website for some white-over-black images.
