Cats purr to as a signal to either happiness/contentment or extreme pain. Yes many people don't know that cats sometimes pur in pain.
This is actually not a signal for people, but rather a language if you will cats have been using with other cats to express emotion to each other.
Its unknown why cats are the only mammals other than some humans who purr, but it is because their tongues have a shape and attachment much like humans and monkeys allowing them to roll the back of their tongue, like a Spanish lover on a hot summers night in Havana... I mean...

Cats purr for different reasons, usually because of happiness, being content and feeling loved, so good for you as a cat owner. Cats also purr when in pain or distress, ie when injured or when giving birth, it somehow has a calming effect on them.

If they are cuddling with you that means they are extremly happy and relazed with you. But they can also purr due to the fact that they are mad also, not too many people know that, so if they are acting mean or upset sometimes they will purr.
