Sellwood is a nice place to live and is very earthy.
St. Johns feels like you are on one of the coast cities, quiet and local but with no waves.
The Multnomah Village is very trendy, and Nob Hill is quite posh and literary.
Arbor Lodge, Albina, and Kenton areas are up and coming.
These are all great areas of the city, and are fun to raise families in. Are you sure you want to live in the burbs?
I mean, Gresham? Beaverton? Really?

Milwaukie is very close to Portland, Beaverton is like 35 mins away from Portland People!!
Miwlaukie has the best schools and is the way to go ! very cute feeling, and the community is amazing best place I have ever lived (and I've been lots of places)
Seriously look into and email me and let me know how you like.
P.S. I was in Beaverton my child years and hated with a burning passion and desire to get out, hillsboro isnt any better at that! stay on the east side of the wilamette .

You need to check out Sherwood!!! It's a little commute but totally woth it, especially if you have a family. I moved from there about 3 years ago and haved missed it everyday since. I looked around alot and fell in love with the town. You have to check it out just to cross it off your list.
My husband is an attorney and worked in downtown Portland. He actually took the bus since the parking downtown stinks and cost some $$$. We have three kids and loved being far enough away from the crowds, but I often met him for lunch downtown and found our favorite resturant of all time in Portland. Cafe Du Berry. I'm drooling just thinking about it. It is not the fastest... but is so worth it!
Back to Sherwood- It has lots to offer as far a price ranges We lived in Woodhaven. Any realtor will know if you ask. We were walking distance from schools and parks and the nicest YMCA ever, with a humoungest pool and gym I've ever seen. I miss it alot. We moved back to So Cal and we love the beach but my heart aches when i think of the wonderful community I left behind. a lot a church goers and liberls too. Anyone can feel good there.
Beaverton and Hillsboro were too sprawling for me. i like to town feeling I got there. I'd move back in a second.
Well, I hope that helped. Good Luck!

If you have money, then Lake Oswego. If you have a little less money, but still some, Tigard or Beaverton. Those are pretty nice and they're right next to Portland.
