I don't understand how to find sections in the bible when people refer me to things like - Genesis 1:1. Is it chapter one, line one? Can someone please explain to me how that labeling thing works?

Genesis 1:1, that is Gensis Chapter 1 verse 1. Or lets say Mark 8:14, that would be the book of Mark, chapter 8, verse 14.

The Bible is divided up into verses. Verses vary in length from partial sentences/phrases to mutiple sentences/paragraphs. Each verse is clearly numbered.

Genisis is the book. The first 1 is for the chapter (usualy the largest number) and the second 1 is the verse. Next two a group of scentences there are smaller numbers.
A way to remeber it and auditorily accknowldge it is say "The book of Gensis, Chapter 1 verse 1" Then you'll get the hang of it.
God bless you.
Good luck!

Oh, here.
http://www.biblegateway.com/

That is a site I use when I'm online. I can type the name of the book, the chapter, and the verse. I can just type the book in the Bible if I want to and then it will take me to it with certain options on what to do next.

EDIT: I can also type a known few words in the space provided and look up verses with those words in it. Also, the site gives you options on which version you want to look things up in. It's a great way to get to know which major version you feel more comfortable with.

It works like this:

(Name of Book) (# of Chapter):(# of Verse)

In your example, Genesis is the Book, then you look in the 1st chapter of Genesis, and the first verse in that chapter.

the first number is the chapter, and the second number is the verse. The verses are all numbered (normally a verse is a sentance or two)
