i like to do frontcrawl, breaststroke, and butterfly. interchange them a bit to get a good workout.

there only 2 things you need to worry about:
- keep moving, dont start resting at the ends of hte lanes.
- make sure you swim at a decent speed, dont go swimming slowly.

At least for a half hour, it's just like any other aerobic exercise. You want to do it for 20 mins. to get your heart rate up and going , any time after that is the amount of time actually burning fat and gaining muscle. So I would suggest 40-45min. You really should do all of the strokes so that you use all of your body, so that you shape up evenly all over. But the freestyle is what burns the most calories, I believe. But each stroke has it's benefits The butterfly and breast stroke are great for your back and legs, and strength building. The backstroke is a great way to cool down at the end and give your arms an opposite stretch, and stretching your sides. Hope this helps.
Mr. Zwink how long has it been since you taught the "frontcrawl"? Must have been some time ago since I'm in my 30's and haven't heard anyone use that term in competative or noncompetative swimming since about 1982.

Freestyle is going to give you the best workout, but it'll wear you out really quickly!

the stroke doesn't matter - just keep moving. Swimming is good exercise for toning, but not for slimming as you don't sweat because the water keeps you cool.
