TRY THE ONES NEAR COVENT GARDEN,
they are probably your best bet.

The Porterhouse in Covent Garden's great - live music that you can get close to watch (or easily get away from and still hear a conversation) and a specialist in beers from all around the world. Has an outdoor drinking area too (though it gets pretty crowded) but you'll find that a rarity in central London.
I'd also recommend Bunker bar on Earlham St (north of Covent gdn) it's a microbrewery and has a nice laid-back atmosphere. Beware the pilsner though, it's deceptively strong!

4)Smollenskys on the Strand do some nice cocktails and have happy hour, although the bar isnt that trendy, but they might have refurbished by now. When i used to go it had more of an American bar and grill feel to it, but nice cocktails

5)There is Sway in Holborn http://www.swaybar.co.uk/. Dimmed lighting, soft seating, and a dance floor

If you are having a late late one go to the Roadhouse in Covent Garden - they always have great bands later on - ignore the early evening one! I like Navajo Joes for a date but not for mates, Henrys is good for mates and Punch & Judy is good for meeting foreigners lol. All in Covent Garden. Yates in Leicester Sq is good but get there mid evening or you have to queue and pay to get in(!!)
