For a consumer or prosumer, "point and shoot" camera, my personal preference is Canon.
For a DSLR, my personal preference is Nikon, with Canon a close second.
However, there are some excellent rated cameras by other brands. My advice would be to choose a few specific models, then look up as many reviews on each as you can, and compare them to each other.

I dont think of there's a ultimate. in case you seem at customer comments you will see that Canon wins greater awards than the others, and additionally they have the main important industry share of all the DSLR makers via a huge margin. For digital element and shoots, its a toss up, however the Canons like the S5 are stunning. I actually have a 850IS i think of it incredibly is, or it coudl be the 870, IS and its great and that i like it, yet i mandatory something to seize the actual moments and supply greater helpful pictures and supply me greater options for what i want to shoot, so i bought my friends used Canon 30D. I went and tried all the recent ones, and the nikon ones have been in the back of interior the technologies whilst in comparison with the Canon or maybe the Pentax. the recent Pentax DSLR is quite effective too, i grew to become into inspired, yet you will get Canon lenses and stuff everywhere, and that grew to become into somethign else I cherished, and you may locate it used additionally to maintain some $$ to boot. i might say get a Canon and you'd be happy!!!!

It's not quite that simple. No one brand is best overall. Canon is a solid choice, as is Panasonic, Fuji and Sony. Each have their own strength's and weaknesses. Actually- I like Kodak's colors the best, and their cameras are smokin' deals, but often don't have the edge when it comes to pixel peeping to compare image quality.
Also- the number of pixels aren't everything. A 6Mpix Fuji (F31fd for instance) will outresolve any of the 7.2Mp crop, because it uses a larger sensor.
The aforementioned brands are my favorites, but you wouldn't do so bad buying a Nikon, Pentax, Olympus or even Casio as well.
It really depends more on your particular needs and the individual camera you select.

the bang for your buck 7.2Megapixel would be a Sony CyberShot, cost about $199, maybe cheaper online, go to www.cnet.com and look for editors picks for digital camaras, i think its 7th, thats really good compared to the higher end cameras, this is more of a starter camera but offers a big screen and clean look.
