NYC is grossly expensive. For $1000 a month you'd be lucky if you could find an apartment on the subway tracks. You might just want to live in jersey or long island and commute, that's what most people do who don't have 4 grand to drop on an apartment.

Man those two criteria will really limit your search . Since you will be working at JFK I can assume that you don't find the sound of large A/C objectionable bc a lot of places that you might want to live are directly under JFK's flightpath's
There are a couple of possibilities:
Howard Beach - very close , very ethnic and fairly safe if you don't have an over abundance of melanin
The Rockaways in any area that has is higher 100 on the B streets
Lastly if you go the other way South on Rockaway Blvd , you may find something in the Five Towns of Nassau County- although you should avoid Inwood.
Personally If I didn't know anything I would stop in the Sherwood Diner on Rockaway just south of Peninsula Blvd during a slow time , sit at the counter , order a cheese burger all the way and shoot the breeze with the locals and find out who knows what

If you move near the Jamaica Station you could take the air train in. It is a bit more than the subway - but it would be an easy commute! Any subway that takes you to Jamaica station would get you to the airtrain.
For other housing along the subway you would have to look along the "a" line in Brooklyn. JFK is not that well connected to the subway.
I think it more likely that you will be taking the bus - not the subway. Check in Rego Park along woodhaven boulevard. Get a bus map and find out where the express lines to JFK run. Along Queens boulevard would be good too. Ozone park, Kew Gardens, Forrest Hills - They would all be good.
Or check valley stream in long Island.

I would recommend living in the Western portion of Nassau County (JFK is in Queens), primarily in Valley Stream. You should be able to find affordable housing and be close to work.
If you wish to live in Queens, to have access to a subway to the airport, you might have a small problem. There really isn't any subway line that goes directly into the airport. The closest is the "A" train which has a station in Howard Beach, but that is at the southern most portion of the airport property and is no where near the terminals. The only mass transit type that goes directly into JFK (not including buses) is the Jamaica Air Train (which can be caught from the Jamaica station @ Archer Avenue/Sutphin Boulevard).

Check out www.craigslist.com
You should be able to find something in ozone park, howard beach, Jamaica, woodhaven, etc for 1000 no problem. The A train gets you right to JFK, but many lines feed into it, so you can live almost anywhere in brooklyn or queens and do fine. Look at rents, locations on craigslist and use subway map at www.mta.info to find a commute you can live with.
Also, in response to false info above, the air train takes you from the A train howard beach to all terminals and has employee discounts. I work the A Line and the train is filled with airport workers at shift change times, esp TSA people.

There are a lot of affordable options in Queens. Jamaica and Ozone Park border JFK. The neighborhoods don't look like much, but they are affordable and reasonably safe. Briarwood (just north of Jamaica) and Kew Gardens are nicer and just a couple stops away on the subway. The Rockaways (particularly the western end) are also both nice and not overly expensive.
The JFK AirTrain, by the way, provides easy connections at both Jamaica (E and J trains, in addition to the LIRR) and Howard Beach (A train).

Live on Long Island. Lawrence or Valley Stream are two communities near the airport. Both are middle class suburban areas. To get to the airport, you would take a bus not the subway.

You should be looking in Queens. Do you have a place to stay for awhile? Is the Airport helping you relocate?
I don't suggest you commit to anything without seeing it first.
Good luck!
