Sounds like he needs help. Since you are his "ex", you might not want to get involved. You should suggest that he should go and get some counselling. He may have mental health issues that you can't tell just by talking on the phone.

He sounds pretty immature. He's needy, doesn't want to make any commitments, but at the same time, it appears that he doesn't want to let go. You have to ask yourself what your feelings are. It seems as though you still have some interest in him, otherwise you wouldn't give him sympathy, counsel, or wonder why you haven't heard from him. So maybe it's a match, but you both don't realize it. Why not kiss and make up? It doesn't sound like a very functional relationship, but it should prevent your ex from having bad dreams, and you from worrying about him.

Theres more to this not alot of detail but if hes not calling for 2 weeks you need to do some investigating, and especially if you arent helping him and hes not giving info.It sounds to me hes a little guilty of something.

Sounds unstable to me. Like he's trying to see how far he can string you along with this act, or is wanting to see your reaction, or for some other weird self-serving or unresolved reason. Strange at least. I don't think I'd stick around.

he sounds like a very immature person to me=some people feel better when they have talked a bit with someone they know well

Hmm..sounds like he is in love with you and wants to make excuses just to talk to you. either that or its some dumb joke that he keeps doing..it is a weird situation though!

I guess he just needs a sympathetic ear, so to speak.
