M16
Pros
easily modified, supports larger number of accessories, adjustable sight apetures, light, good range
Cons
No automatic (military versions only have single shot and burst), will jam/misfeed more than an AK

AK47
Pros
Cheap to mass produce. Simple to disassemble, high rate of fire, you can literally bury one, dig it up, and it will fire, uses a heavier round.
Cons
not a lot of modifications, jumps up and left on auto (must compensate)

All in all, the M16/M4. Not so 20 years ago though.
In a forest hunting...M16/M4 more accuracy
In a forest at war...AK47 more lead going downrange

Do a search like "m16 ak-47 comparison" - you'll get all the info and opinions you could want.

They score differently in each of your categories, and it's not clear you could come up with a top scorer in a your categories of "power, speed, damage, durability, and usage".

If I only had one to depend on in an uncertain long-term situation, I'd go with the AK-47.

M16 - more powerful, more accurate, more range, slightly higher rate of fire.

AK-47 - Cheaper, more durable, easier to repair.

In reality they're pretty close, I prefer the M!6, because that bananaclip on the AK always gets in my way.

Different weapons for different conditions. M16 doesn't do well in extremely dirty/dusty conditions and the AK47 is a stamped out POS that just happens to be so loosely made, that it works well with all the dirt running through it. Considering the cartridge is only 39mm in length compared to US 7.62 which 51mm, they don't have a great/accurate range.

In a nutshell... if I wanted to snipe someone, I'd go with the M16. If I wanted to blow a boatload of holes in something less than 100 meters away... I'd go wit the AK.

I agree with ducky.
The M16 has a farther range up to 800 meters which is meant to give you the advantage over the AK47, the AK is only good to about 400 m. The M16 jams easy when it gets dirty and has more parts to clean. The AK47 can get filthy dirty and keep on kicking.
I was partial to the M60 while in the 82nd Airborne.

The m-16 has out done the AK-47 in every aspect of war. The usage varies. If you are a 3rd world country, then the AK-47 is the weapon of choice because it's lighter and cheaper than the M-16.

In my opinion AK-47 Is a 7.62 MM round which has a LOT of power ,AK -47 works in all kinds of conditions .

then again M16 uses a standard NATO 5.56 mm which in most cases is sonic and M16 is very accurate at longer distance

...........both are very good weapons so I guess it depends on the application. Both have been tested extensively by the PEOPLE who test.
me ........I wouldn't mind both of 'em

......for rabbit hunting or ducks, and shooting fish in a barrel ,.......of course!!!

because the 12 Gage with a laser ,.....lost the laser and now it wont shoot straight . LOL

Both are very good rifles. The biggest difference between the two is the design of the AK-47 gives it considerable space between the receiver and the moving interior parts. IN short..you can pour dirt into it or bury it in muddy earth and it will fire when you retrieve it. This is why it has become the preferred weapon in third world countries.

I have an AR-15 and an AK-47 and, if it all came down and I needed to take just one of them to survive, it would be the AK-47... those things are amazing... not much quality but they have so many sloppy parts that they just keep firing and firing... even after you drop them in the mud.

The AR-15 is wonderful at the NRA range and that's about it.

M16 is the best, especially the newer version. Keep that baby clean and oiled and it'll out fire
any rifle in the world. I have never had any trouble with it. I have also fired the AK47 and it also is a good rifle, but I like the M16 better.
