I get depressed in this section sometimes. So many people have such a bleary outlook toward God (I use that loosly to refer to all perceptions), towards people, and towards life.

Why is it so hard to believe that it's okay to simply enjoy our lives as long as we don't harm anyone else? I mean, it's important to take time to help others, but that can be fun, and rewarding.

I think religion is taking so much joy out of life, and I think the very religious country I live in (the US) is depressed and on tons of meds for a reason. Did you know they've done studies on happiness, and we are a very unhappy country despite our wealth?

I believe God would want us to enjoy the life we are given, completely. Every second of it. This whole sin thing is such a drag. Just be a good person, that's it. It's not that hard. Yeah, we're not perfect, but I think I do pretty well most of the time, so I know it's not impossible.

This negative energy gets me down. How about you guys?

I wasn't talking about fun on here, but fun in life, and most importantly, an attitude toward life.

Gwhiz: I believe all Gods are one. I believe they are different aspects of a larger God, made seperate so we can focus on smaller details.

"To give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul"

That sounds a little strange but I think it's true. You shouldn't let the small stuff drag you down. If you're unhappy with your religion or your life, you need to find the source of that unhappiness. If Yahoo Answers is the source, you should think about taking a break. Grab a cup of coffee or go out for a walk. The addiction will be here when you come back.

This may seem a little strange but the happiest people I know are those who do not have a "religion". They have a relationship with Jesus and simply enjoy life as it comes. These are not people that will shove the Bible down your throat either. They just love the Lord and all people. Period.

You make a valid point about religion taking the fun out of life. Having a church doctrine that says you cannot do this or that or you will be in trouble is simply a scare tactic and ridiculous. We should not become so withdrawn that we live in fear and are afraid of the "boogie man". We should go out and have fun and know that God will let us know if we are doing something wrong.

I am a Christian and am not afraid of what man thinks about me. I will make some laugh, some cry, some angry. I may even help someone find Jesus along the way. The reason is this... I know who I am and I am a child of the living God. Confidence and boldness with a mix of meekness and humility makes for a very interesting and fun life.

Please read "A Generous Orthadoxy". The commercialism and the instant gratification society we live in tends to water down the message that is out there. Don't be discouraged! It can be fun but you have to be part of the solution. There are Contemporary Worship centers that have many different ways to recieve God's word based on what you are looking for. I have found it at my church but I am trying to live within it as well. I try to be the example and trust in God's word. We are human so of course we get bogged down by life. Start a discussion group with people of like minds and make a difference! Good luck and God Bless!

I feel that the goal of life is simple. It is to thrive and be happy. None of us had a "choice" in whether or not we were born, but now that we are alive we have the power to either enjoy it or end it. If you find yourself in a situation, you should strive to make the best of it. Increase your happiness. Have fun with things. If you're going to be alive anyways, you might as well have a good time while you're at it.

I wish more people felt like that.

Christians trade their present condition for their future. That being said there is some truth to what you are saying. St. Theresa of Avila used to say "Lord save us from long faced nuns" (she herself was a nun). One has to have the right idea about sin and suffering. Most people who get so depressed over their sin are just full of Pride because they are not gloomy for what the sin has done to our Lord but, they are gloomy because THEY are not the great people they thought they were. God knows everything about us so we just need to be Thankful that he loves us even when we are not lovable and try our hardest to love our neighbor when he is not lovable and our Lord in every way but, we should be mindful of the Scripture about "To everything there is a season"

There is allot of negative energy spent on both sides, and I include myself in that pool.

I think the reason is that we both have a hard time understanding why the other can't reason like we do, and that leads to negativity.

At the end of the day, I get to go home to my kids and live life happily though, and hopefully the majority of those on this board do the same.

When religion was a private matter between the believer and the supreme being and was not a call for political action or a justification for hatred and judgment we were all better off. However, as religion has always been about a small minority trying to tell the rest of us so-called sinners how to live our lives, I don't think it was ever a barrel of laughs.

Look at it this way,if there was no gays there would be nobody complaining about gays, same goes for sneak thiefs,if there was no robbers there would be nobody complaining about robbers etc.

Not complaining about robbers wont make robbers not exist.Same for gays and sneak thiefs.
The problem isnt religion, the problem is people who do wrong.
