What's the best car I can get for the least amount of money? I live in the mountains, so four wheel drive is a must. I need good gas milegage and for the most part I don't care what it looks like.

Subaru. All their makes and models of vehicles make very good all wheel drive vehicles.
Small Car: Impreza
Small SUV: Forester
Large Car: Legacy/Outback

subaru's are not FOUR wheel drive their ALL wheel drive there is a difference. You want four wheel drive because my neighbor has a subaru and when it gets bad out she can't get out that day. Go with a Jeep- they are the best four wheel drive automaker in the world becuase every one of their models comes in four wheel drive. also the 4 and 6 cylinder engines get pretty good mileage and they are very durable.

A 4WD Car that is doesn't cost alot. Why not try a older 4X4 toyota truck. There's cheaper and their 4 wheel drive. If not you can always try mazda MPV Van, their AWD and their pertty cool too.

if your looking for 4wd and off road ability with reliability i would look at older Toyota 4runners. If you just need to use it on road but are dealing with hills and snow you should look at Awd like a used Subaru (I like Audi's but they aren't cheap to buy or maintain) Subaru's will be cheaper all the way around.

Subaru is your best bet on reliability. Not very cheap but very relaible 4 wheel drive.

idea?ok.if you want inexpensive safe and realiable car makes for college student like you? .just wait in the future perhaps the car manufacturer may produce cars that you want.At present,nowadays inexpensive cars proceed to second hand car dealer,safe and reliable proceed to brand new car dealers.You cant mix inexpensive safe and reliable in just one car.Be happy and smile with your geo tracker.and save your money for buying safe and realiable car.
