If so, from what?
Is it a "self-calculating" force or forces? For example considering the symmetry and patterns observed in humans, animals, insects, plants, etc.
Or is that just......nature?

jibba,
I have. In a nutshell, it says, "force of nature".
I'm talking beyond that.

bif,
Yeah. I know. Beyond that.

mucky, So that's as far as it goes. Just "natural selection"

Too, What?
You HAVE to have a force to do ANYTHING.

The force of nature

Is there a 'force' that cause 2+2 to be equal to 4?

Evolution is at heart a rather simple process, and the only reason (apart from prejudice and ignorance) that people have such a hard time getting their heads round it is that it's counterintuitive. We don't normally see complexity *increase* naturally over time, so the very idea of it troubles us.

Indeed, such an increase in complexity may appear to be counter to the laws of thermodynamics - until you remember that the sun has had to pour a kilowatt per square metre onto the earth for billions of years in order to drive evolution. Without that energy input, it wouldn't happen.

The specific issue you're bringing up - symmetry and regular patters in animals and plants - is the result of a large number of genetic factors, including the developmental control exerted by hox and homeobox genes.

In a nutshell, symmetry is easier for genes to produce than asymmetry. Nature's like that: planets are close to perfect spheres, but not because somebody polished them.

Evolution is a consequence.

Mutation and selection (usually natural) are the conditions that result in Evolution as the consequence

Neither mutation nor selection are forces. Mutation is something that happens to organisms because of problems in gene transcription and transmission; selection is merely that some organisms are not suited to their environment well enough to survive as a species, some are.

Read a book - you said EVOLUTION, not creation of life. Evolution says NOTHING about creation of life.

A 'force'? Why would there need to be a force?

This is like asking "Is there a force that makes '4' come after '3'?".

LOL at your "forces of nature" response.

Don't you think it might have been a good idea to have learned something about your topic before making fun of those of us who know about it? You're REALLY making a fool of yourself here.

There is no "force". Evolution is just the manner in which we describe the change and adaptation that occurs in life. The patterns and summetry are adaptive and/or exist because we share a common evolution and ecology.

'Force' implies something external that determines how things work.

Symmetry and patterns are artefacts of the way cells divide. It's more of a template than a force. There is no intelligence or calculation.

It's like the way glass shatters. Not always the same way, but there are certain tendencies you'll see. It's just the outcome of its structure.

No.

Not all evolution is by natural selection. The evolution of broccoli and 50 other domestic plants from the humble mustard was done by mankind.

It's called natural selection, eg., women being attracted to stronger, taller men...and that results in stronger offspring that are more likely to survive, etc.

Try reading a textbook or two! You would be amazed how much you might learn!
