I really want it to be a law like that. I am so tired of seeing dogs laying on the road dead and cars just passing over them like nothing. I think its so cruel! I understand that sometimes it can be an accident and owners should be very careful that there dogs aren't carelessly running around. But there are also some very cruel people out there! I've seen them! About six years ago my chihuahua got it by a car. I took him outside to do his business but like he was so little he manage to get out through a bar fence we had. My friend and I quickly went after him but he was crossing the street and the light was turning green for cars to pass by. He got hit by a truck that was going too fast, didn't care to slow down even though it was apparent two little girls were trying to get their dog. He just killed my dog in front of me and left like nothing! I was soooo sad and I'm never going to forget about it. That's not all I've seen other incidents that I know people are cruel!

I understand what your saying. Owners do have the responsibility of keeping their dogs safe. But I KNOW there are people who don't care to hit a dog. Plus, honestly people speed too much....way over speed limit, its why if its an accident they don't have time to stop by that time. But even if its an accident the least they can do is stop speacially if the owner is right there dealing with the lost. I strongly believe something has to be done!

If the dog is running stray and not on a leash, that's illegal. Sometimes the drivers don't see them. It's better to hit the animal than to swerve and cause an accident. I've hit deer. They come out of nowhere. I don't steer toward them. It makes a mess of your car. I'm sorry about your dog, but it was an accident.

Yes, okay..I see your point..and it always makes me sad to see a dog hit on the street (thankfully it doesn't happen much where I live)
but on the other side of that coin...if dogs are properly taken care of -there's a guy lives down the road here in a 50 mph zone whos dog lives outside with no fence, not in the house, I'm just waiting for the day that poor doggy is lying in the ditch. :-(
(my dogs live in the house with me, except when they go in their fenced back yard for potties..when we're outside of the fence they are properly controled on a leash etc)
yes, folks need to slow down....but also, dog owners need to keep their dogs safe...behind a fence, or in the house.
I'm so sorry to hear what happened to your pup. THat is awful and sad. That truck driver should have been a decent human being and at least stopped if not slowed down before it even happened.
This is the problem, people in cars don't stop and realize that they are behind several hundred pounds of "could kill someone!" When I drive fast I always think..."could a person or animal somehow end up in front of me..and would I have time to stop if they did?" then I slow the heck down! I refuse to have someones death (animal or human) on my conscience!

I agree. When a person hits a dog it should be treated as if they hit a person. Most people who hit any animal especially dogs just don't care. I watched someone hit a dog before and they just kept on driving. Luckily I was there to see it. The dog was severely injured, but was still alive. I took it to the vet and they saved it. He had a fractured rib, a broken leg, and a broken jaw. If I wouldn't have been there to save him he would have died. I got the license plate number off of the car, and reported it to the police. They didn't do anything. I thought is was so cruel. I found the owner of the dog he belonged to a 5 year old girl. Her parents were grateful I was so caring.

Where I come from, it IS illegal not to stop and help if you run a dog over. Not that that stops people from doing it...
Check the laws in your area, maybe it is illegal! Then if you see anyone hit a dog and not stop you can take their license plate number and report them. I'd hunt anyone down if I saw them run a dog or cat over and not stop.

I agree whole heartedly. It was 2 weeks ago this Saturday that a car went around construction barricades and ran over my little 1 year old fawn pug.
The road was a dead end since it was closed for construction so he had to turn around. My husband was picking her up ooff the street and the guy just sped past him and didn't even stop. She died and it is the sadest thing ever. It is a capital offense to kill a police dog but anyone can just kill my baby and get away with it.
It makes me hate all people that drive brown SUVs and live in Grapevine Texas. I am looking for you you evil person.

Sometimes dogs (and people) dart out into the street and the oncoming driver can't react quickly enough.
However, dogs must be leashed in public places (the street). That is the law. Also, it's illegal to drive recklessly. I suppose each case must be judged individually.

definately it should be illegal to do a hit and run on a dog. It is mean, cruel, and PATHETIC! If a dog wants to jump in front of a moving car, it isn't the drivers fault, usualy its the owners for letting it run about. Though everybody makes mistakes.
when I was a kid, my bus driver ran over a dog, and pulled over and cried for about 5 minutes, then got out, looked at its collar got the number and notified the owner. Who in their right mind wouldnt do the same?

It incredibly relies upon. i've got considered a narrative in simple terms like that one right here and the guy went to reformatory because of fact they fired 2 pictures to intentionally kill the canine as a substitute of one shot an *occasion* in that's foot or leg to easily injure it. the guy additionally did not have the gun registered so there are distinctive underlying info and rules finding on the state. i don't think of the canine might desire to have been killed yet in spite of this i'm involved by animal rights so that's in simple terms my concept and particularly some human beings do not agree, that's wonderful with me. and you reported the canine broke unfastened from the pen it grew to become into in meaning that the proprietors have been controlling their canine legally, they might't be held in charge for it breaking unfastened from that's pen. Now if it grew to become into in simple terms working unfastened because of fact they permit it then that's distinctive, it grew to become into basically a terrible subject.

It is illegal for dogs to be unleashed in the street, so there are already such laws.
I do believe it should be mandatory for the driver to stop.(unless it is unsafe to stop, such as on the freeway)
However, I have had two dogs hit by a car on purpose! One, they came up on the sidewalk to hit my little dog, and another time they drove into my unfenced front yard to hit it..Both incidence ARE against the law, but unless you can get the license plate number, there is no way to catch them..In this state there is a mandatory jail time for purposely killing a dog.

I'm sorry but I disagree. I love pets, I have many myself (2 dogs, guinea pig, fish) but human life and the safety/welfare of my children in the care with me is more important. If it comes down to hitting a cat/dog or potentially hurting myself/my kids/hitting another car, that's what's going to happen.
It's ILLEGAL for a dog to be off leash, and obviously unsafe. Now I'm sure there are sick people who intentionally hit them, that's wrong- but illegal- as in, go to jail for it? COME ON. There is SO MUCH MORE for the cops to deal with. I think that people should stop and try to identify and contact the pet's owner.
