I would suggest looking in to the Canon Powershot S3 IS. It has a 12x zoom, and takes good quality photos. The best photo's are taken on Program (P) mode, with the image stabilization set on "shoot only", ISO set manually on 80, 100 or 200, and the other settings tweaked to personal preference.
The Canon Powershot S3 IS takes the best video clips of any still camera. Besides your options of 240x320 at 15, 30 or 60 fps or 480x640 at 15 or 30 fps; it has a dedicated video button (most don't) so you can take video while on any setting, and also take high resolution stills while taking the video (there is a very brief blank spot in the video where the still is taken, which can be edited out). On most other still camera, you have to set the camera on video before taking a video clip, which takes a few seconds, and in which time you could miss what you wanted to shoot.
This camera records sound in stereo, and you can use the zoom while recording video. You can take up to 8 minutes (1gb) of video at a time, and if you have, say, a 4gb sd card, you can take one 8 minute video clip after another. For the video feature, you need a high speed SD card, such as Sandisks Ultra II or Extreme III.
The S3 IS gets excellent battery life, I avg 500 still photo's and five minutes of video per set of batteries. That is also about what I can fit on one 2gb memory card.

when you say "from a distance" I"m assuming that you're looking for a camera with a longer zoom lens.
Here are a few to consider:
Canon S3IS
Panasonic FZ8
Sony H2, H5, and some newer H-series that have a 15x zoom
Olympus SP550UZ
Fuji S6000fd (same as S6500 depending on country)
you can't go wrong with any of them. Happy shopping.

I agree with Lorna B. You cant beat an Olympus, but consider a Pentax if there is one similar. The lens quality is better.
