I will be travelling with my 3 year old cat from Toronto ON to Victoria BC. She's very healthy but unfortunatly she suffers from seizures they do not happen often but they come when she is very nervous. I ask the vet if she would need some drugs and she recommended valium... is this a good choice??? PLEASE HELP ME!

I am a veterinary technician. Valium is often used in cats for various reasons: appetite stimulant, sedation, seizure control, etc. Apparently, your vet elected to prescribe Valium as a travel sedative for your cat because of the seizure problem. It's a much safer drug for this purpose in cats that have seizures than other drugs used for the same purpose (such as Acepromazine). In fact, Valium is the drug of choice to STOP active seizures in cats and dogs.

Your vet has made a good choice. I would go with it if it were my cat. Be sure to follow the vet's instructions very closely, and watch your cat for any breakthrough seizures that might happen if she gets super-stressed.

Yes, valium is the standard treatment for treating seizures when they occur - it is a muscle relaxant. It can also be used as a temporary measure to sedate cats and prevent seizures. It is usually given in the proper veterinary form, Diazepam. Phenobarbitol is used for long-term control of seizures.

Funnily enough, your vet wouldn't have suggested this drug if it wasn't appropriate!!! Why don't you direct any questions you have at the prescribing vet - why run to Yahoo Answers when you had a professional standing right there in front of you?! (or right there on the phone)

Valium may keep your cat calmer or relaxed enough to sleep while traveling. Vets also use it to relieve pain & as an appetite stimulant for sick cats that won't eat. I''m not sure it it helps control seizures - it may - just be sure the vet prescribing the valium is aware the cat has seizures.

Valium will calm her down just like it does people! You shouldn't be giving them valium that was dosed for people but prescribed from the vet for cats

Valium could calm the cat, IF prescribed by a vet ONLY...

Are you very good at giving cats pills? It is tricky...

I would get several vets opinions on that, human medications have are very bad for cats. I accidentally killed my cat several years ago, giving it pepto-bismo, it went into convulsions and died. I was horrified. Please check this out thoroughly
