Like, how are they different from their single-consonant counterparts?

And, also... how do you pronouce a word that has an apostrophe in the middle of it?

Sorry Shyguy, there is no double consonant in "Io seguo"...

Anyhow, you need to imagine the words with a double consonant as split in 2, with a bit of a break between them. It will give the idea of "stressing" the double consonant.
For example:
eccomi (here I am) : ec-comi
becco (beak) : bec-co
etc..
You could also practice words similar between them but differentiated for the present of a doulbe consonant, such as casa (casa, house) and cassa (cas-sa, case)..

hope it helps a bit

As for the second bit, I have NEVER seen a word with the apostrophe in the middle of it (and Italian is my mother tongue!). We use apostrophe like in English, to drop letters at the end of words, such as "l'uovo" (the egg), it should be lo uovo, but it sounds awful!

Shyguy obviously doesn't know what a consonant is...

For Italian double consonants, you have to pronounce both. Think of it like this:
the word "dita" is pronounced DEE-tah
but "ditta" is pronounced DEET-tah
"acero" is pronounced AH-chay-roh
but "acciaccare" is aht-chahk-KAH-ray
"pizia" is PEE-tsee-ah
but "pizza" is PEET-tsah
Get the idea?

Your Best Answer says she's never seen a word w/ an apostrophe in the middle of it, and then gives an example of what she clearly thinks is two words but an English reader would consider a word w/ an apostrophe in it. Sighhhhh!
