3500 calories must be burned or not consumed to lose 1 pound. Say your on a 1500 calorie a day diet you drop it to 500 calories a day. Your taking in 3500 calories in 7 days (week). So you would lose 2 lbs each week. At 12weeks that's 24lbs. That's based on no calories burned.

Assuming that you didn't do anything other than stop eating only to satisfy the 500 calories deficit a day. It will vary from person to person. If your metabolic rate is high from constant food intake than it won't take long to lose weight, however this weight will be from muscle loss not fat. Your body would think that you are starving so it will give up muscle to satisfy the lack of caloric intake. After you burn the muscle then your fat will be next which is last of the reserves. As your metabolic rate slows you begin to try and prolong the starvation which becomes a problem when you go back to taking in more calories. Because when you slowed your metabolism down as soon as you begin to increase food intake everything will be stored as fat, because your body has a slow metabolic rate. Those proving why dieting doesn't work, you will most likely gain double what you lost before the 500 calorie a day diet. It's not really what you eat, but how often and how much as this will increase your metabolism and you will actually burn fat and calories. So you need to eat more often, with small portions, and healthy choices. 1 to 2 lbs a week is a realistic goal with exercise and a healthy diet. If you did what your asking you would probably lose close to half your body weight. That is an extreme diet, you need some caliores for daily function. Hope this helps a little.

Wow, I can't imagine what you'd eat at 500 calories a day. A ton of fruit, popcorn and a couple bites of high fat foods I guess. I think if someone tried to do that they'd likely binge eat after a day or so on the diet.

It would be a little more healthy to eat 1,500 calories a day, then burn off 1,000 calories at the gym, but your body would still suffer. It would probably take longer for you to become weak and lose your energy.

I don't reccomend you try either methods.

One pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories. The average recommended calorie intake a day is 2000 calories. If you were to eat 500 calories a day you would burn about 1,5000 calories a day. Therefore it would take you 2 and 1/3 days to burn one pound of fat. If you stuck with that diet you could burn about 39 pounds of fat in 3 months. Keep in mind this is the average person. If you are a small girl then you wouldn't burn the calories as fast as large man.

I don't think this is possible. I think you would be in a hospital long before the 3 months. Besides any weight you might loose you would also loose muscle mass and organ function.
They say that there is no such thing as a stupid question, that may be right. That doesn't stop some people from having really stupid tuch as yours.

well
for the first few days you'll lose from 10-15 pounds , but then you're metabolism will slow down

and 3 months with such low cal intake = fatal.

you would probably die.

If you want to lose weight, cut 500 calories out PER DAY... its not safe to only eat 500 calories.

your body will go into starvation mode, you will begind to faint and stockpile fat while your muscles break down.

industry is right and you will not do yourself any good at all if you want to lose weight try and keep it around 1500 to 1600 cal a day and workout run or anything to keep you active...starving is not the answer it will only cause you more problems...

You won't lose, in fact you may gain. Your body will think it's starving, and hold on to any fat it can. Talk to your doctor and find out what your minimum caloric intake should be (usually 1800- 2500 daily) The amount varies based on sex, weight, and age.
