I got a free dog out of the paper and the people said it didn't bite but when I got it home it attacked my husband and he had to go to the hospital because the bites were so bad. These people know they lied and won't take the dog back because it's so vicious. It didn't act like it when I got it but then it freaked out. Can I sue these people for the medical bills?

Very probably...use the link below to find someone qualified to represent you in a civil litigation matter involving Domestic Animals.

Well that's really tricky. It depends on the laws in your state. Also most lawyers won't even bother with a case if there weren't any serious or fatal injuries involved($$$$$). Not even sure what they would say, because the dog wasn't even purchased, it was given away. You may be able to sue in court, but that would be in small claims. If you seeked representation, you may end up paying a lawyer more than you are entitled to get back if you have a suit. Yeah I know, the law sucks sometimes. Honestly, you may have better luck calling a show like Judge Mathis, People's Court etc ( seriously) Good Luck. Cheers.

Buyer Beware, hunh? I read the answers and was ready to agree with you. Wait, you paid no money, different laws!!!
Well, maybe there's an attorney who finds that there is some law equating the unleashing of a harmful animal under any circumstances.
I might try, if I had gone to law school. There seems to be something so wrong with this course of action, that it should be punishable even as a criminal offense, as well as civil.
Even though you should ahve known better. Why do shelters make sure to keep the dogs for three days, if the average person is expected to know better?
Hmm, I'm building your case already! LOL
Good luck and I hope your hubby gets better soon!

there is a reason for the saying "Caveat Emptor" or "buyer beware". Never ever take an animal that you are not familiar with, and have not had several days to observe. Why do you think animal shelters hold dogs for three days? They are being observed for dangerous behaviors, like biting or aggressiveness. I'm sorry, but I suspect any court is going to tell you that if you didn't take such simple precautions, it is your own fault that someone got bit.

I wouldnt because you probably wont win & maybe the dog was nice it was just scared, gosh if you were taken from your home all of a sudden and have strangers trying to pet you wouldnt be frieghtened and get defensive? (my ex-fiances dog was nice but it bit me 2x,he wasnt familar w/me yet & i didnt sue he couldnt control his dogs actions) Do you have health insurance (it shouldve paid for it)? Id just get the dog put down ASAP. Id just go to the pound or ask the vet if they know anyone who has a dog or puppies for sale, theyd know best. Take Care!

Unfortanelty probably not, because you got it free. Unless you got it in writing or on tape or recording ,then there there might be a chance.
