It's a powdery, lime-like substance made from fossilized diatomes (a type of algae).

Some people use it as a natural flea remedy, and as a wormer -- I used it to keep ants out of my house, and it worked!

It's basically fossilized plankton. It is used as a natural wormer and flea killer. I use it as I have a dog that gets blisters from chemical flea treatments. Just dust it into their coats daily if they have fleas. For maintaining, it depends on how bad the fleas are around you. They are bad by me thanks to all of the feral cats so I use it every two weeks. It can be used for ticks but I don't have them so I can't say anything about that. You can sprinkle it on carpets and the yard as well to help kill any fleas there. For worming, two tablespoons daily for two weeks. They DO NOT like to take it. Make sure that if you use it that you get the food grade, NOT the pool grade.

I think it is a popular substance used in pool filters. It obviously has other properties, such as flea, and tick repellant.

There are various aquarium filters which also use this substance.
