I think a good idea might be to take a cue from the hit show Mythbusters (my absolute FAVORITE). I studied physics in college and want to teach one day. I will have my students look up current myths that are able to be studied using scientific methods to show if they're plausible or not.

How about studying the toxic waste in your area, make a scaled model of your neighborhood and show how the waste goes to the plant and then to the reservoirs etc.,etc., et.c., show how it gets recycled. Establish a flow of what gets eliminated and what stays for awhile, and then what stays forever.
