I used to use cedar shavings in the older puppies play area. BUT, It did cause mildly irritated eyes.
As you are breeding two breeds with sensitive eyes, I wouldn't recommend it.
The best I have used for the puppy play pen was sand..Easy to keep clean, and no more eye irritation..
My dogs are all indoors right now. I use pine bark mulch in the area where I take them to pee when I don't have time for a longer walk. It stays odor-free. I wouldn't recommend it for constant living though, as it also would be irritating.

Is it OK to use wood shavings for dog and puppy bedding ?

Only if it is untreated. So, if you are going to use munch, like what you would use in the garden, NO. They put chemicals on it to keep the bugs away. Those chemicals could really hurt your dog. So only use untreated wood chips. Also keep a close I on the dog, as he may chew or eat the wood chips, which could cause health problems. You might just want to stick to stray.

About herbal flea control....You are on your own. Try A pet store like Pet Co. Maybe they have something.

Cedar Shavings For Dogs

Wood shavings are fine as long as they are meant for animal bedding, just be sure to keep them clean. (Cedar will actually help deter fleas)

To prevent fleas from actually getting on your pup, add a quarter of a garlic clove in his food (Larger dogs may need a half a clove of garlic) this works as a dewormer as well as as flea repellant.

You can also comb some diatomaceous earth into his coat. This is available at any garden center. (this stuff is great to sprinkle about the house where fleas are a problem as well)

Yes.... Make sure that you place the shavings in a bag of some sort so that the dogs/puppies will not try to eat it.

Cedar is really good for flea control. We used to use it when we raised dogs.

Using the wood shavings for bedding is fine but putting it in an outside enclosure may not be too good of an idea. It will be hard to keep clean. Cleaning poop out of it & the urine will be absorbed & will begin to smell. It just isn't sanitary. You need to be able to disinfect (bleach) the area to keep is clean & I don't think that is possible with the wood shavings.

The wood shavings for the bed should be inside a fabric bag of some sort. Gunny sacks, denim something pretty tough. Sprinkle insect dust on, in & around the bedding. Not too much but enough. You don't want it to be too toxic for your dogs.

Yes it is OK to use shavings. We use pine shavings with our German Shepherd pups when they are weaned. The shavings need to be cleaned daily, and if you are thinking about using this outside, I would not. You can also use cedar shavings or if you want, you could mix the cedar shavings with the wood shavings. Remember to make sure that there are no large pieces that the pups can chew up or choke on. And puppies will ingest some as well with puppies being puppies and eating poop. This has led to blockages with small pups.

Personally I prefer a shavings bed as my mare is much cleaner on shavings. Try asking around and trying different shavings as I can set up a new bed for 2 - 3 bales and I have big deep beds - I'm a bit like you liking a deep fluffy bed. I pay about £7 a bale but they last ages and are a big bale, tighly packed. If you prefer straw and your horse is cleaner on straw then go with what you prefer.

Fleas are a major pest. There are various species of fleas - cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and rabbit fleas.
You can get rid of them by the safest and cheapest methods like boric acid.
