Some would say so.
I'm a life-long Lutheran. Sometimes we tend to act "cult" ish, but that's more because of our German and/or Scandanavian roots, and not so much because of our faith.
I see your point, though. We should not be so quick to judge Mormonism or any other faith that way. Thanks for a point well-made and well-taken.

I guess it depends on your definition. Looks like we have a couple of different definitions of cult already displayed. I believe Lutherans are a Christian Church doing the best they can with what they have and know. I believe every Christian Church does the same for the most part (there are some exceptions). The LDS Church (Mormons) is also not a cult. It follows Early Christian doctrine better than any church I have ever researched. It practices things that were once practiced until corruption disbanded Christianity before it was even called Christianity. They went through a lot of persecution. Scripture was changed, etc.
Constantine tried to reorganize Christianity so he set up a council of scholars in Nicene to put together all Christian scriptures. They found this to be extremely difficult and did the best they could to chose what was doctrine and what was hearsay. They did not understand essential things so they took votes and made the best attempt they could to restore it, but at that point, the Church that Jesus Christ set up, had been altered, and therefore in apostasy (just as the scriptures foretold would occur).

Well we (Lutherans) have been called worse. I guess if the Roman Catholic church is the authority on cults, then everyone not Roman Catholic is going to be a member of a cult. But let's face it, the RCC does not harbor any cult like groups in their jurisdiction.
Definition-
"a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader. "

NO. We are a Christian denomination. However in the 1500s we were not popular with the Roman catholics as Martin Luther had some ideas that would have taken power and money from the "then pope". It is unfortunate that we are called Lutherans as it was originally a slam against the followers of Luther's teachings. All he wanted to do was give the bible to the common man and make them aware of some of the false teachings (like indulgences) that were floating around back then. We believe the bible is the inherent word of God and are very much a Christian church by definition.

lutherans are not a cult. the only reason catholic books would say that is because catholics are the worse type of christian. they think they are better than all the other types. lutherans are the same as catholics except lutherans dont kneel or pray to mary or other saints.
funny that catholics pray to mary. kinda sounds like breaking the first comandment.

Newer religions are usually called cults, but cults have some distinguishing characteristics to watch out for:
They try to get you to give up your family and friends
They try to get you to give everything to them by telling you you will live a simple, spiritual life.

If Lutherans don't put anything between you and Jesus, they are not a cult.
Ephesians 2:8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.
