Contrary to the outside view some have that Catholicism is legalistic, it is not.

The flesh is just that -- flesh. In Catholic teaching, it is the intent of an act that is important. The tattoo is simply a work of art. However, as the body is a temple of the Spirit, if one does apply art, it should be of a respectful and artistic merit.

I was at a tattoo & piercing parlor pondering getting a rather private piercing done, and a guy came in and asked about getting a tattoo and what kinda things the artist would do -- and I'll never forget how impressed I was with the artist's simple but steady faith in his beliefs. He calmly and honestly explained that he didn't do anything that he felt violated his Christian beliefs, and that if the guy wanted stuff like that, the artist knew other artists who would do them.

I got my piercing done right then and there 'cause I knew it was an artist I could trust, even though I'm an atheist myself.

It really depends on the tattoo, for example a lapsed Catholic may because of their rebelliousness might get something that is against faith tattoo`d on their body,eg the name of satan, or some written word against faith and morals, other than this intention I fail to see any sin in it,just silliness really cause once on it`s there for life.

I can find no Catholic teaching against tattoos.

However a point to ponder:

You are a masterpiece work of art, created in the image and likeness of the artist, God.

Would you go up to Leonardo Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper" and try to "improve" it by adding your own touches here and there?

With love in Christ.
