Idioma is used in most of the Spanish speaking countries. Lengua isn't used as much, but you can use both.

I would use idioma but either one works. I am fluent in Spanish.

At the taqueria near my house I can get tacos 'al pastor', with 'asada', with 'cabeza'....and with 'lengua'. So I'm sticking with "idioma"! ;)

"language" = idioma eg. "she speaks seven languages"
"language" = lenguaje eg. "poetic language" or "he uses a lot of bad language"

if you said
"lengua espanola" is correct and formal.

idioma is more common and unformal !
