No, when people misuse God, which many do-often, it is not a contradiction of free will. Free will has nothing to do with it. Free will only means "you can choose what you want to do"-period.
An example of divine intervention would be:
parting the Red Sea-
manna in the wilderness-
Jesus' resurrection from the grave-
Israel becoming a nation in 1948-
Tiny Israel defeating 5 Arab nations 1000 times their size in just a few days, and taking territory away from them---Impossible!!!!!
Yep, I would say that was divine intervention.

One day when I was running on a heavily wooded trail, I felt a pair of hands on my shoulders stop me dead in my tracks. At that same moment, although I was alone, I felt someone point to the tall weeds right beside me. There was a water moccasin raised up and ready to strike. I stood frozen and the snake eventually dropped down and went its way..I didn't see the snake before hand and had no way of knowing it was there until this invisible being, I think an angel stopped me still and pointed it out...I also had a feeling not to go that way on the trail earlier but I choose to go that way anyway. This in my opinion, is where my freewill, choosing to be on a deserted trail I had no business on, got over ridden by divine intervention. Why did my free will get over ridden? Because of my faith, I pray for protection before I run.
I don't know if this is the kind of answer you are looking for. I am sharing a personal experience.

Hmm...I suppose if I were a Christian, I could cite the following as "divine intervention":
At the age of 21, I was driving on a three-lane highway at around75-80 mph. Traffic was moderately heavy for being 10 in the morning on a Friday. In the middle lane ahead of me were two tractor trailers, riding one in front of the other. I, being young and in a hurry, decided to pass them, and switched to the left lane, picking up speed as I did. I passed the rear truck, and had just about made it to the front of the first when the driver (who had fallen asleep) swerved over into my little Dodge Neon, hit me in the rear quarter panel, and knocked me into a full 360 spin in front of the truck and over into the three lanes of traffic. I hit the guardrail on the right lane, spun out again (another thirty feet into traffic), and ended up sunk back into guardrail. I then unbuckled my seatbelt, wrenched open the door as far as I could, and got out, much to the shock of the dozen or so cars that had pulled over after witnessing the accident.
Not a scratch, not a bruise, not even whiplash.
Ten days later my brother was killed in a crash. Weird, right?

Like when you walk down the street and three guys want to stomp you into the dirt when one of them says, let's go get a cheeseburger and they walk off. That is divine intervention. some call it luck or something else because they do not understand that God controls everything and works all things to good.

"Free Will," is the choices one makes of his own accord for himself whether right or wrong.
"Divine Intervention," is an act of God usually done in the form of miracles, signs and wonders, angels unaware, etc. And is based on a person's choices to trust God over his own free will to handle a situation.
God does not force His will upon a person; but He will intervene according to a person's faith when he or she request Him to do so.
God Bless You!
Peace,
Hope

My free will nearly got me killed when I was a teenager. Divine intervention is the only reason I can answer your question now, at age 52.

The Red Sox coming from 3 down to beat the Yankees in the ALCS in 2004, and then going on to win the World Series defied all logic.
EDIT : Primo...I visited Fenway for the first time in the summer of 2004. That place is LIKE a church. I'm a casual baseball fan on my best day, but ever since that day, I've been a psuedo-Sawx fan. I can't claim to have lived and died with them like long time fans have, but I check the scores for them more often than my hometown Braves.

free will is misrepresented soo much, we have a type of free will as to say we are in total control is not true... God does have a hand on things however He does allow us to pretty much make our own decisions, and when He doesnt allow us to He does it in a way that we think we did it...
