Belief in anything provides "meaning" in an otherwise unpredictable world. For most, it's too scary to "not know" things, and to believe in something makes it so we "know" something and have thus psychologically talked ourselves into the illusion of being "in control" of our lives.

Belief is real to the believer ... like drunkenness or hallucinations. I think there is probably a better way. .... The acid test for 'truth' is whether the evidence can convince someone that X is the case, even though the person in question would rather believe otherwise. This happens all the time in science (most new theories initially face opposition). The last time it happened in faith was on the Road to Damascus (and even then it happened to a dyed in the wool liar).

Because they are not beliefs...I have had a direct, personal experience of God - that is why I know God exists.
Beliefs that are totally blind with no backing or supporting evidence, I consider only ideas to investigate and choose to not belive or disbelieve.
I have little use for belief at all.

I'm an atheist.
What makes me certain is studying neuroscience, psychology, and computer science, to the point I realized that free will doesn't exist.
Theism makes absolutely no sense without free will.
I yield that deism's still an option, but since the consequences of deism and atheism are exactly the same, it seems silly to accept the a priori agent of a deity.

Faith (I have faith that my religion is true and feel the Holy Spirit working in my life) and Reason (I accept the rational proofs for the existence of God, as well as the rational proofs for the mission of Baha'u'llah).
