It is a simple verbal paradox...nothing more. It has no relation to reality.

do everything = make something cannot lift?

If God could build it...and not be able to lift it...then God can't do everything.

Nothing in reality words like this...it is like saying, have you stopped beating your wife?

If you say yes, you admit you were beating your wife.
If you say no, you admit you are still beating your wife.

It is a trick question...stacked against you both ways. This is the kind of thing you hear from children...you would think an adult would understand a stacked question and not ask such a thing.

Such false questions can not be answered - so say nothing at all, or point out the above.

In a way that is a good question, but then the answer would probably be, yes, but WHY? why would he want to, same as being titled the worlds strongest person, wait a few days and someone else will claim the title. If God would build a rock he could not lift, he would then find a way to lift it. I didnt' really help or answer, just my opinion. best of luck.

Classical Christian theology holds that God cannot act against his nature, and that there is an integral relationship between who God is (his nature) and what can can do (his will.) Therefore, yes there are things that God cannot do-- ex. become evil, or create a another being equivalent to himself.

The idea that God can do anything comes from a misunderstanding of what it means to say that God is omnipotent. The classical theological understanding of this indicates that God is not dependent on any other being to sustain his existence, but has everything, in of himself, to be who he is. This is one of the differences between the Creator and his creatures. However, many construe the quality of God's omnipotence to mean that God can do anything he wants. This is called "voluntarism" and it asserts that God's will can act in any way, even if it contradicts God's nature. Folks usually advocate this position because they feel that God's sovereignty is threatened by anything that would limit God's power, even if the limit was a result of God's nature. Unfortunately, this sensibility (voluntarism) also makes God untrustworthy and potentially capricious. So in answer to your friend's question: No, God cannot create that rock, because to do so would mean that God acted against his nature and created a being that was essentially equivalent to himself.

Yes, God DID create a stone He cannot lift. It's called the unrepentent human heart. Fortunately, He has given US the ability to lift them up to Him. Quite an honor, isn't it?

[Edit] After reading all the other answers, it is obvious that if I do not get the 10 pts, your true intention in asking this will be revealed.

Satan is trying to get to us in many ways. He loves it when we stumble and question our Heavenly Father. And he uses all types of ways to do that, some through the people in our lives. Sometimes we hear questions that don't deserve an answer. They are not about God but merely to make ridicule of Him and you. Sometimes I pray and say :"God, what do I say to that? give me the words." Yes, God can do anything He puts His mind to. He can build a rock and move mountains. He can intervene and allow stuff to happen. He gives us our life and He can take it whenever he pleases at any time. That's why I think you ought to not focus on silly questions, but on the purpose God has put in your heart, to be light and salt.

It's a hypothetical argument set up to test your knowledge, but in a way that sets you up for only two potential answers, each which gives them victory in a debate. It's basically a two-headed coin debate, or a stacked deck, or whatever you want to call it. It really doesn't seek answers, only vistory. And last time I checked, there was nothing in the bible to answer this question. My best response in that time is, "I don't know, and that is a good question, but what I do know is what has happened in my own life......." and share testimonies of God's power in your life. If he won't take that as an answer, then you have to leave it at "sorry, I just don't know"

God's intellect and power goes far beyond the understanding of our feeble minds. He can do that, and anything else He wants to do. God says in the bible, "I will laugh at their folly." Folly means foolishness, something that all human beings seem to have in abundance.
Also, God created the laws of nature and physics. Why would He want to break a law which He, Himself created just to prove such a petty and juvenile point, not that He can't. Remember when He caused the sun to stand still for Joshua. Just maintain your faith in Him and you will not go wrong.

there is only one thing God can not do

that is Lie

look at it this was God is a spirit (no body)
the only body God has is the Christ so as the Christ God chose not to lift beyond that any other man can lift.

i the end it is silliness to argue meaningless points, most of the time it ain't worth the aggravation.

what purpose would it serve if he could or could not? Why does God always have to prove that he is almighty? It is called faith, in which a lot of people have trouble with. maybe he could not lift the rock physically, but he has strength of other areas, in which it could be lifted.

there is nothing that he cannot lift, and not a rock too big for him to create. It does not take miracles to beleive in God anyways, it takes faith. So dont even worry about what your idiotic friend has to say.
