When we lived in a neighborhood I was the 'safe house' for all the kids after school. Our street was loaded with school aged kids (about 20) and I had two of my own. I was one of two moms who didn't work. The other usually went somewhere after the kids got out of school so I was the only mom who was there when the kids got off the bus. The parents had told all of them that if there was any kind of trouble before they got home to go to my house. I had the phone number of the parent's work so if I felt they needed to come home, I could call them.

It was a pretty good setup since most ended up in my yard playing anyway.

Keeping the yard clean.
Keeping the music down after dark.
Not being annoyed by a neighbor that has junk in the yard.
Waving to neighbors while I or they drive by.
Chatting on occasion. Drinking a beer with them, even when I dont really care for beer, but it tastes better when having a nice time.
sharing my garden with them by giving them vegetables.
giving a hand when ever needed.
This is what I got back from my neighbors. One neighbor, a guide fisherman, took me fishing, I also had a great deal of salmon to eat that they offered. A young couple, neighbors of mine, on occasion has a band and plays loud music. They asked the neighbors if it was ok to practice. Another neighbor gave me a bunch of ****, so I put it in my garden, of course it was horse dung. Another neighbor, the collector of all things, is a very religious and hard working 70 year old.
Being a good neighbor is being kind to any person, not just next door neighbors.

I keep my noise level to a bare minimum (still have the tv on, dishwasher running, etc., but I don't have screaming matches with my husband or kids, NO loud music, etc.) I keep the patio area in front of my front door (I live in an apartment, by the way) incredibly clean and free of debris, I always speak and act friendly toward my neighbors, I don't always hog the good parking spots (even if one's open, I figure everyone deserves a chance to park there every once in a while, even if I am the first one home from work/errands and it's available), I don't blare my stereo while driving through the parking lot, I don't speed and nearly run down people's kids (like some people in our complex do). That's all I can think of really.

I have a young woman and her very small baby for neighbors. Her hubby works nights, so they are home alone in a not-so-good neighborhood all night long. It pays to have an aggressive, protective female for a neighbor, I guess. I once saw a male trying to enter her house and damn near killed him. He was NOT getting past me to hurt that woman and her baby. No way!

I had no idea it was a relative of hers, by the way. Oopsie.

Her hubby likes my aggressive tendencies since he doesn't have to worry when he's at work.

Yes. I live in an RV park. I keep my yard clean, drive the 5 mile an hour speed limit and am quite. I wish all my neighbors did the same. I smile and wave to everyone.

I'm quite.
I don't blast loud obnoxious music.
I don't cook stank food that stanks up the area.
I don't have loud obnoxious people outside of my property causing a raucous.
I mind my own business and keep my property clean and drama free.

I don't know my neighbours. There is one neighbour that I talked to a bunch of times, I don't know anyone else. Reg... He is great. I gave him some hollyhock seeds.
