Heaven and Hell is just as plausible of an answer as no answer at all. Believing in something doesn't make it true. If religions all have answers to these questions regarding the meaning life and death they are all different. So who is the right one. It is the same for athiests who prefer to have no opinion. And that is all it is is opinion. Once you come to the realization that there is not a known answer to these questions it is the opposite of depressing. It liberates you to live your life to the fullest and also be a good person. And just accept that it will be what whatever it is going to be.

Once again, you missed the whole point of evolution. We are not from apes or monkeys. We share a common ancestor. Which is why we both still exist. Why should humans have a heaven, but not other animals? Or is it just cute animals and not ugly ones such as bugs? Or is it we have a heaven because our brains are advanced enough to worry about life after death? Why can't people just live a good life then die with dignity like an animal does? All are questions to ponder in life regardless of beliefs. It's not a hopeless existense if you don't live to die.

There is nothing after death. One ceases to exist...
That's the Materialist Atheist perspective, which is the only I can give.
Hope comes from the purpose and values myself and society give things, so yes I do have hope and purpose.
The thrid point seems to confuse Evolution as being a ladder, when it branches out like a tree. We evolved from the Great Apes and share common ancestors with other apes and monkeys.
Nothing particularly depressing about this worldview, unless you put value in the wrong places...

Why is it depressing to believe that you are given one life, and you should strive to be the best person you can be and treat your fellow humans with respect and dignity while you're around? Belief in an afterlife just allows you to think that what you do here on Earth doesn't matter that much, so you can destroy the environment, sin against your fellow human beings, judge others for not being like you... etc. And if there is an afterlife, then I choose to believe that you'll get in based on good works, not "accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior", for whatever that's worth.

Well you seem to be very confused. Atheists and people who believe in Evolution do not think we came from monkeys.
That whole "we came from monkeys" was started by ignorant creationism believers who did not understand that by saying it they are basically saying that a person is descended from their cousin...as opposed to Evolution which says monkeys and humans evolved from a common ancestor which is like saying you and your cousin are descended from grandparent.
So whatever the rest of your question it is not my concern but the fact that monkeys still exists is not proof we did not evolve.

Ok, you're an idiot .
I just thought I'd point that fact out first and foremost.
Now, as for you "question"...
First, we hope for TODAY, you know, the REAL world where we all live? You may want to check it out sometime.
Secondly your monkey comment is typical christian ignorance.
Evolution does not say we came from monkeys. Ever. It states, and correctly so, that humans, monkeys, apes, orangutans ect.. are all primates. And that we all share a common ancestor.
See? Real science vs your mythology. And science wins every single time.

After death there's usually some sort of funeral, and then a miserable party, and then everyone goes home. Except the dead person.
As to how we come into existence - you make it clear from your confused 'monkey' remark that you're not ready for the whole story, so wait and see if you grow up first, and then ask again.
Regarding your own specific existence - you should ask your mummy and daddy about that.

Why does the fact that we don't have eternal life seem depressing, or mean that we have no hope?
It means THIS life is valuable.
Consider the fundamental principle of economics -- supply and demand. If we have a limited amount of life, it's valuable. If we have infinite life, it's completely worthless.
I find the belief in an afterlife depressing. It makes everything, existence, humanity, myself, completely and utterly meaningless and purposeless.

*sigh*
we did not come from monkeys, bonobos and chimps are our cousins and the respective endpoints of their branching off of the great ape line. We are another endpoint. This is why there are still monkeys. Think branching trees.
We have plenty to believe in. Are you suggesting the only thing that keeps you going is a sky daddy? Everyone has parents, loved ones, children, friends, aspirations, inspiration, dreams etc.
And no, when you are dead that is the end of it. So I suggest you make the most of it instead of wasting your time with empty rituals to appease a nonexistent god.

Well, it's all in how you look at it. I find the notion that this life is a test of some sort, in order to spend ETERNITY praising a being that doesn't think I'm worthy, very depressing.
Read a book or two before you judge, k?
