Ask the vet for some meds to relax them. Keep them in their carriers while you're driving. Also once you get to the new place you'll have to be super careful about not letting them make a run for the door. Cats have wonderful homing devises, and will usually try to make a run for it so they can go back home. It take them about 6 months to understand that this is their new home. We had a cat that got out 3 weeks after we moved. 4 days after it got out my old neighbor called and said she had our cat. She had walked over 90 miles back home. We have no idea how she made it alive.

I've moved from the midwest to California with two cats and moved back with three cats and a large dog. It's an effort but it's worth it. There are already some good suggestions here but I also suggest stopping every night at a motel. You can check the web for a site that lists pet-friendly motels and have your reservations made by the time you leave so you aren't tempted to keep driving.

The kitties need a break every so often during the day too, just to be cuddled and talked to for a few minutes if nothing else. We always had water available for them and kittie crunchies (less messy than canned food). They meowed incessantly for about the first hour on each trip but then settled down and slept most of the time.

We also had some of those disposable prefilled litter pans with us too and had one in the crate with them, but they never used it during the day. They did use it at night though.

If you stay in a motel, be kind to the housekeeper and bring cleaning supplies such as a broom/dustpan, spray cleaner, paper towels etc so you don't leave a pet mess for her to clean up.

Also, watch those beds on pedestals! There is a space between the wall and bed that cats can get into and you can't reach them! LOL!

I've moved across the country with cats before... It isn't easy. Moving is stressful on everyone -- but with patience and love it will be fine. Taking them with you, no matter how much it stresses them out, is MUCH better than leaving them behind!

If you think they will really freak out, talk with a vet about getting a mild tranquilizer for them.

If at all possible, get a large dog crate, big enough for all three of them to fit in (assuming they get along), plus a small litter box. I've used a brownie pan for a litter box... They will be much, much safer in a crate. Put some familiar toys and blankets in the crate. If they don't HAVE a blanket, try getting them one now. I mean, take out an old blanket and put it where they sleep, so that it will become familiar to them, then put that blanket in the crate.

Also, you might, if there is time before you have to move, try getting them used to traveling. Get their crate all set up, just the way it will be when you move, and then take them on short trips just around the block. End up at home, all nice and happy.

And, as much as possible, while traveling try to keep to their regular routine. Feed them at the same times, go to bed at the same time, things like that.

If you are afraid they won't drink on the trip, get some canned cat food and add water to it. You can make it almost soupy and that will help keep them from becoming dehydrated. Have water available, of course. You might not want to keep water in the crate while the car is moving, so you'll need to take frequent breaks to offer them water. If they like yogurt, you can water that down a bit too and give them some. Or buy that special milk that won't cause digestive problems -- sold at pet stores. Keeping them hydrated is very important.

Good luck with the move. I'm sure you will all be fine. Vermont is a GORGEOUS place to live!

put them on a leash and drag them behind the car. Like The National Lampoons vacation dog.
