It really isn't a matter of whether God can lie or not. But why would He? He has nothing to gain or lose, He is God, He is all powerful, all knowing, and everything belongs to Him. He doesn't need to lie.
If He wanted to torture you forever for no reason whatsoever, He could do that, and even tell you about it first. Just what do you think you could do about it? Not one thing.
God's rules are for us. They are good rules. If He didn't care about us, why would He give us rules in the first place? If He wanted to cause more suffering, why not just tell us to kill one another, to cheat, to steal, to lie? He didn't do that. The rules He gave us reflect what He thinks is important. Evidently, since He put a ban on lying in His rules, truth is important to Him.
Either trust Him or don't. Ultimately, that is your choice.

This is a pretty silly question. And, if I believed in a god, I would assume it chooses not to lie, not that it couldn't. But then there's the conundrum, "Could god make a rock so large and heavy that he couldn't move it?"

God is perfect. Lying is a sin. Sin can not be in the presence of God

Because they don't understand that an omnipotent being can lie, or they are changing the definition of omnipotent. Realize who you are dealing with, here. :)

Because all-powerful and all-"good" do not gel with the state of the world.
"Damn," replies God,"that means I cannot exist."
And *poof* he disappears with a puff of smoke.

He don't tell lies, not he can't lie. Get the fact straight.
