many hermaphrodites only have male/female characteristics on the outside, but are the opposite as far as their chromosome development? and thus they are literally born thinking they are men when they look like a woman, and vice versa? how would you address these people for wanting to be with members of apparently the same sex?

I think that when something like that happen. You should hope that they find a partner that feel the same way they do.
So I would tell them... different strokes for different folks.
