To be able to talk to him like you would a close friend or a loved one. You can go to him and throw all your burdens on him and he will refresh you.
James 4:8 "Draw close to God and he will draw close to you."

Same thing it means to have an Intimate relationship with a close friend. Intimacy is being able to be open and honest. Most people put on a false facade to the people around them. They are afraid that if people knew the bad stuff they wouldn't want to be friends. So we build walls. But a close friend will love us no matter what? We can tell them the bad stuff without worrying about the effect.
Same thing with a husband and wife. If they have an intimate relationship then they share their hurts and pains with one another. Those are the kinds of marriages that last. The ones that don't communicate or keep secrets are the ones that fail.
Same thing with God. When you are open and honest with God, that's intimacy. But it's a two way street. God wants you to be honest (even though he already knows the truth) but he wants you to learn about him. That you do through scripture and fellowship. What kind of a friendship would it be if he learned all about you, but you didn't learn all about him?

Etymology: Late Latin intimatus, past participle of intimare to put in, announce, from Latin intimus innermost, superlative of Old Latin *interus inward -- more at INTERIOR
1 : to make known especially publicly or formally
2 : to communicate delicately and indirectly
ADJECTIVE: 1. Marked by close acquaintance, association, or familiarity.
The definitions I found for intimate do not fit with the first thought that came into my head. I think as a culture, America has changed the definition of intimacy. Sex is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear that word yet I know that an intimate relationship with Jesus does not refer to sex though I believe that level of intimacy is required in other ways.
I would say that this intimate relationship has more to do with putting Christ in your life in a very mental, spiritual and physical way. Mental because you have to choose to do so, make a mental agreement. Spiritual because the Holy Spirit living in you is required, He gets to control your life now. Physical because this relationship should change who you are and the way you live your life. Also physical because you aren't shy about letting others know that this is now your most important relationship. It should definitely be public knowledge (unlike sex which is normally more private).

Romans 8:27 And He that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit , because He makes intersession for the Saints according to the will of God.
Many Christians get saved just by asking Jesus to come into their hearts. I was saved as a child this way. And I fell away, & when I repented for a drunken blackout 10 yrs later, then a spiritual hand grabbed my heart tightly & my heart hurt & I heard voices... And this was the beginning of a 1 yr breakdown (That I have since been healed from). Well, just lately, the Lord let me know that was His hand that grabbed my heart, also. All this time & I still thought it was an oppressing spirit, & hadn't thought about this for a long time. Just like this heart pain also took my favorite radio station away from me at the time (Seattle, 99.9 FM).
Today Jesus speaks to me, gets my attention, etc. through my heart many times.
Intimacy goes much deeper within when it comes to God. Gods love is much more than we can imagine.

There are very few people on this planet that I can truly be me. Esp. when I am hurting and need a snot blowing gasping for air because I hurt so deep that I feel like I am going to die....cry.
God knows me. He knows my aches, my dreams, my pain, my joy. Sometimes I laugh so much when we are talking that my sides hurt.
Then there are scars so deep, that only He can heal them. And some are so deep, that I don't even know that they are shaping generations of my family. I have just lived with them. But he heals them. And I trust Him to.
God is that intimate with me. When I can go so far, He can go infinitely more.
That is my intimate relationship with my ABBA father.
hope this helps, blessings, vicki

Those that love the truth seek him and receive a gift of faith and through faith comes revelation and a personal relationship with him. God is real and can make himself known to you and you can enjoy a real relationship with him in prayer, meditation and in his word.

Jesus revealed that the God to whom we should pray is a Father. And what does Christ reveal about Him? He is "in heaven." He has a Kingdom or Government that will be set up on this earth. He—as our Father—is One who can give us daily bread, forgive our sins, deliver us from Satan and bring us into that everlasting Kingdom. He gave man the ability to have a relationship with Him. Man had the capacity to understand and live by the same spiritual laws that God Himself lives by and that are part of His character. Man could grow to become more like God through an intimate relationship with Him.
Our first human parent, Adam, made a fateful choice for the rest of the human race when he tried to find a way of life for himself apart from the intimate relationship God was offering him. We have been groping for meaning ever since.
The awe-inspiring truth is that God is creating a family—the God family. He is the Father of that family. How did Jesus Christ reveal God to His disciples? As "our Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:9). Jesus tells us to follow the ways of God "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:45).
God invites us into a father-child relationship with Himself and gives us His Spirit so we can become His children: ". . . But you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit [itself] bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ . . ." (Romans 8:15-17).
After this life, those to whom God gives His Spirit receive eternal life through a resurrection from the dead. "We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and
this mortal must put on immortality" (1 Corinthians 15:51-53).
It is through the resurrection to eternal life that God transforms us into glorified and immortal beings, as God Himself is. As 1 John 3:2 tells us, "we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is."
God is in the process of creating His own family. He will give humans eternal life, which we will share with Him for eternity. He desires to share His eternal existence with others in a way of life of love toward others. Because of His love, God brought the universe into existence in the first place. It is because of God's love that He gave us a part in it. Life is the result of God's love and His desire to share His love with His immortal family for eternity.
