ZIP files are compression files. You need to unzip (a.k.a. "Extract") them. There are several free and commercial decompression software. Many of which have already been mentioned already by others, such as: WinZip, WinRAR and PKZip. Unfortunately, all of them cost a pretty penny. There are several excellent free programs, such as 7-Zip. You can find all these programs and more at (http://www.filehippo.com/software/compression/).

If you are using Windows XP, it comes with an unzip function. It is a very basic program and does not unzip all zip files. To unzip a file using Windows XP, right click the file and select "Extract all..."

BTW, if the zip file is encrypted, you will need the password to unzip it. In addition, certain zip files can only be unzip with the same program which was used to zip the files in the first place. For example, zip files, created by WinZip using their patented maximum compression ratio, can only be unzipped with WinZip. The same applies for WinRAR and PKZip.

If you are not using Windows XP, then go and get the trial version of WinZip. If you have Windows XP, then you should be able to open up the zipfile and then choose File-Extract All. Choose where you want the data to go and you are done!

Winzip. It's a shareware program that doesn't expire. It asks you to buy it after 45(?) days but if you choose not to, it will still work.

Here's a freebie that doesn't ask you to buy it if you feel uncomfortable about using an "unpaid for" program

winRAR is the best, fastest and works for every other common compression format, including one of the most common: .rar
