The Constitution forbids government from passing any law the hinders nor aids any specific religion, with some exceptions.
The World as a whole, is not in favor of polygamy (multiple marriages) thus the Government PRIOR to admitting Utah as a state, required them, as a condition for acceptance, to make polygamy illegal by law. This is using a loop hole since Utah was a territory not a state, it wasn't even a protectorate. And all the government ask for was a written law.
Now, as to the Yaqi and others that use Peyote, they had been doing it for centuries before the whiteman and they also have treaties.
YOu will notice that Indians, using a loop hole in the law, now have Casinos that late 18 year olds play, they have tax free booze and ciagrettes. Why, because they are an AUTONOMUS NATION by treaty, with limitations. They have to get state permission.
Now the use of Peyote is ONLY allowed for RITUALS connected with RELIGION. It can't be used for fun, games and recreation.
You are probably referring to Marihuana in use in certain situations. The Medical community is split. There is no conclusive evidence it helps any more than some legal pill might.
Yes this is a poltical football to a degree. Even Pharmacists aren't sure if they want to keep and stock "medicinal" marihuana for dispensing by prescription and the AMA is not sure it want's to allow doctors that privillage.
It's a poltical football that could get resolved in another 20 years.

I don't think the government favors religion solely, I just think that they favor religious organizations when getting votes and support. The best thing our country could do is probably not have any government regulated healthcare. That would lower health care costs, make more medical/health practices available, and keep the government from limiting what we can do to stay healthy.

IMHO... because they have no street smarts. Going to Harvard and Yale may have given them pedigrees... but they have been so isolated from every day mundane life that they are emotionally, physically, psychologically and spiritually separated from "reality", the reality that our society is not surviving under the current capitalistic and double-standard moral set-up it espouses. Having book smarts alone only shows you know how to do "what you're told".

Religious groups can mobilize toward concerted political action, and thus gain influence. Individuals seeking medicinal uses of illicit substances have fewer advocates for their rights, and fewer avenues of appeal.

Because many of those religions are much much older then the government. Like its not bad enough we yanked the land, culture and faith of the Native American's we are going to rob them of it all over again? And its not imaginary to them. Its thier choice and they have that right t ochoose.
