and the fact that they spend over $200,000.00 per month on utilities...several people responded that this may only be a portion of the church budget...and they are sure that a large percentage is still spent on missions, etc...

That may be so...but, they could spend $200,000.00 more per month if they were better stewards of the money.

Question is this...what would Jesus do? Would he build a huge building and spend so much on utilities...to reach the people in the wealthy suburbs who probably have many opportunities to hear about Jesus...or would he take the money and give to the poor and preach in the inner cities where churches have folded because of lack of financial funding...and reach the poor and homeless?

Those churches have little to do with God and much to do with man's pride.

I agree James, okay believers need a place to worship together and why not,I think that this keeping up with the Jones`s is the problem,to attract members, there are huge tecno-signs and all available modern comforts too, this is not the face of the poor Christ, the building should be as spartan as possible and only the money that goes to pay the salary of the Minister and overheads of the building should be used regularly, the rest should go to the poor, and your right this is what Jesus would have done.

A 5,000-member congregation could meet in a large warehouse instead of in an elaborate cathedral, save a ton of money and still have room for everyone--and would then be able to help so many more people with the money they save. Our priorities are totally messed up in developed countries. What would Jesus do? Check out the links below.

I think it is great to see a church doing so well. I have no clue what they use their money for and neither do you. How do you know they do not give to the poor. Most Baptist supports missions. They might spend 10,000 in missions, and they might spend 10,000 in giving to the needy. Until you have all the facts dont bash a church.

Of course Jesus would teach the poor. "Church" is not about teaching religion and morality, it's ALL about money and control, and has been for centuries. The pastor that married me and my ex, made $80,000/yr, in a large town that had 3 other Lutheran churches in it.

So you close the doors and everybody stays home. Then who gets help?
