Sounds like there may be a problem with a blocked jet in the carb? The engine on start up will be using the pilot or idle jet but when the engine sees an increase in the load (Changing into drive on an auto box) fuel will be drawn into the engine via the main jets. If the car has stood for a long time it is probable that the fuel in the carb evaporated and left residue in the jets.
You need to remove the carb and give a it a good clean.

Here is what I think is your problem.
It runs great and starts great when in drive. When you put the auto tranny in gear it stalls. The problem is usually with a vacuum hose in the wrong area or the vacuum advance on your distributor is bad or not hooked up right.
The reason the car stalls is because the vacuum is drawn away from the engine and to the trans causing it to stall.
Check all vacuum lines for leaks and make sure they are hooked up right, and in the right positions. Once you have done that and it still stalls check the vacuum advance on the distributor.
Also check into a pointless ignition system by pertronics. I have 3 Galaxies with this system and its great, no additional hookups, replaces your points and condenser, mine has been in use for 10 years.

Replace the points and condenser. Borrow a dwell meter and a timing light. A chiltons book should list the specs. Once dwell and timing are correct, adj carb. Screw both screws all the way in, back out one and half turns each, then start engine and back out each screw a bit till highest idle is reached, then screw in 1/8 turn for each. Given that no fuel has varnished in the carb, this will make it run great. If still have trouble after doing this then kit the carb.

After setting this long, the fuel pump in the carb has quit working. clean the carb and put a kit in it. Set you're timing with a timing light and if you live around sea level, advance it about 3 degrees. Even if the motor sound right, if the timing is slow it will cause this problem.

I dont know what you want to know, but i will try to answer as best i can-It could be starting at the tank it could be the pick-up tube, and from there to the fuel filters and then to the carb.It may need rebuilding or the accelerator pump gone bad from setting so long and dried out,and then air filter cloged up.If none of these work-try a complete tune up-try and older mechanic they will know these cars well and will try to buy it from you, they are nice cars.

Check your timing with a light and that your points are in working order. you may just need to give her a complet tune up. You may also have build up in the carb and it will need to be rebuilt.
