I had always heard that the higher spf number sunscreen had the less protection it actually provides. Here is what I found:

The higher the SPF number, the better protection against the sun's harmful UVB rays. The SPF number lets you know how much longer you can stay out of the sun without burning. For example, if it takes 15 minutes for a person to burn, an SPF 15 will allow them to stay out in the sun 15 times longer without burning.
How High Should SPF Be?
Experts recommend an SPF 15-30 with UVA and UVB ray protection. Higher SPFs provide only a smaller amount of protection (about 1-2%).

Fair skinned people who are sensitive to the sun may want to choose an SPF of 25-30. People with darker or olive toned skin should buy an SPF15 or higher to protect from burning. Keep in mind that darker skin is not immune to the damaging effects of the sun. It may not burn as easily, but is still affected by the sun's rays.

Experts recommend an SPF 15 with "broad spectrum" protection for daily sunscreen use.

As it states, make sure to get something to protect against both UVA and UVB rays but, if it provides both, you shouldn't go higher than 25 to 30 SPF

I have very fair skin, so I can relate. I use a brand called Eucerin, SPF 60. For very fair skin, you need to reapply more often than every 90 minutes. More like every 30-45. Also, cover the skin with fabric (clothes) as much as possilbe, but still put the sunblock on under the clothes. The Eucerin spf 60 is made for scars, sun sensitivity due to drugs, and very fair skin. It is photostable and equally protective against UVA and UVB rays.

Aloe Gator waterproof sunscreen is great, in or out of the water. It's one of the only sunscreen products i've found that lasts a long time and really works. You don't have to go to Europe to get this stuff either!!

Well I live in Europe and haven't noticed a huge difference when I use ours (Nivea, Ambre Soleil, etc.) though we do have several brands which are very good and are waterproof. The brand "Daylong" makes a sun block that is specially made for children & babies.

Funny, I've always heard the Australian ones are the best.
