You change sound to electrical energy every time you speak on your telephone or into a microphone.

Every microphone changes sound to electrical energy. But there is not enough sound energy around to any useful amount of work. Even a dangerously loud sound has less than one watt of energy in it. Your 500 watt stereo actually puts out less than one watt of sound energy, the rest is wasted as heat. The 500 watts is just the amount of electricity it uses, not the sound energy it produces.
