Cats usually have two litters a year; they usually have 4-6 kittens in a litter, but it can be more - 9 and over.

There are so many homeless and unwanted cats around, and one unneutered female can be responsible for about 20,000 descendants within five years!

It is much kinder to the cat herself, and for the good of the cat world generally , to have her spayed. She would be healthier and would not want to roam in search of males as she would when in season.

Males should be neutered too. Unneutered toms get into fights which can lead to serious injuries and diseases, they spray pungent urine about the place which makes neighbours (and sometimes their own owners) angry, and they go off roaming for females, and may get lost/run over.

I am involved in cat rescue work and it is heartbreaking seeing so many unwanted, lost and abandoned cats needing good homes. This even happens to pedigree cats.

They can have them about 4 times a year (2 month gestation, birth, suckle for 4-5 weeks, get pregnant again). It's not good for them (the female will have a much shorter lifespan) it's not good to bring that many kittens into the world without homes.
Better to get females spayed and males neutered.

A cat can get pregnant during her first heat and that can occur as early as 5 months of age.
She could have be pregnant again within weeks of delivering the first litter.

Having a cat spayed is the best way to stop this from happening.
