The manufacturers find it easier to pack sqaure tins of corned beef into square cardboard boxes and loaves of bread used to always be square so once the corned beef was sliced it would fit onto the bread much better. The reason tins of corned beef have keys was for the troops in the trenches during the first and second world wars, it was easier for them to open the tins without searching for a tin opener.

Don't know? But why they put those stupid key openers on them i dont know you end up taking half your fingers off when opening the tin,and then the corned beef gets stuck in one side so you end up having to prise it out with a knife. What a waste off time!

I don't know but I love getting corned beef just so I can unwrap the tin. Love it. Very sad I know. It's useful to have when you havent got a can opener handy too.

Maybe it comes from square corned cows and i don't think an ordinary tin opener will go round the corners.

Because if they were it would be dog food.

Isnt it because its quite an old foodstuff (I mean one of the first to be tinned) and the traditional key open tins have remained. A bit like sardines?
Or maybe its so you can get it all out in one lump to make it easier to cut into slices.

easier to slice when it comes out, dont use the key open both ends with a tin opener. then push it out onto a plate, simple no cut fingers!!

Good question, I really don't know. Maybe because when sliced it fits into sandwiches better than round. They are a pain to open. Take care xxx
