Right. I adopted my cat from a rescue centre about 6 weeks ago.
She'd been spayed 3 days before I picked her up.
But now she's starting to balloon in the middle and feels pregnant.
How long are cats pregnant for and could she have conceived prior to the spaying and be carrying?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes - does anyone want a kitten?

Thanks for your help.
Mx.

I know that the vets check for pregnancy before spaying them. If she's pregnant then they give you choice to terminate the pregnancy or take her home and continue it. If she was truly spayed then she can not get pregnant. The vet has removed her female organs that prevent pregnancy. If she does turn out pregnant I think I would be calling the rescue center and letting them know and make them refund you some money. It takes about 60 days for a cat to carry her babies give or take a few.

Sorry, I can't take a kitten my cat just had 5 Sunday. You won't have any trouble getting rid of them though if she is pregnant.

She just may be happy to have found a nice home and is eating a lot.

If she has been spayed the uterus and ovaries WILL have been removed and there is no chance she is pregnant. Neutered female cats are more prone to putting on weight and it could just be this.

However, a number of possibilities remain and it would be worth getting her checked by your vet.

Sometimes, when a cat is spayed only one of 2 uterine horns can be found (the uterus is a Y shape but in some cats only one part of the Y exists). This is rare and usually means the cat has been born with just one, but if you are very unlucky and she has been left with a single horn she may be pregnant.

Other reasons for an enlarged abdomen include heart disease, liver disease, enlarged organs, obesity, tumours and feline infectious peritonitis (which is invariably fatal).

Cats are pregnant for about 63 days but can vary a few days either side of this.

You most likely have a neutered female who is putting on weight, so please don't panic but I would get it checked by a vet.

If the cat was pregnant the kittens would have been aborted during the surgery.
Are you sure she was spayed?
You should be able to clearly see the scar if she was.

If there is no scar, then she very well may be pregnant.
BUT, if there is a scar she may have an infection, worms or some other problem that needs to be taken care of by a Vet.

If it were me I'd have the cat checked.

if she was spayed while she was pregnant they would have removed the babies. i had my kitten spayed and she done exactly the same thing she ballooned in the middle and i thought she was pregnant as well so i asked the vet and he said it is a common side affect and not to worry, well after a week or so she was fine. so the answer is no she is not pregnant.

Hi hun,

Either they didn't spay her or something is wrong. If she was definitely spayed, she won't be pregnant because I believe they remove the womb.

Roundworms can make a cat look pregnant - they swell the stomach up and make it look rather large.

The best thing you can do is to take her to the vet and get her checked out, but it sounds like roundworm to me hun.

Good luck, I hope kitty's ok.

Are you quite sure she was spayed before you got her? Did you see the stitches? Cats' gestation periods usually last from 57-63 days. And no, if she was pregnant when she was spayed, the procedure would have ended it.
Suggest you take her to the vet and have her checked out.

a cat can be preganant when they get spayed but the vet would have terminated the pregnancy when he did the spaying so i doubt she is pregnant but i would get her checked out there could be something nasty going on especially as it is so recent that she was spayed.

as far as i understand, they remove the uterus, so there can be no space for kittens to grow when she has no uterus.
maybe she has an infection from the spaying. i suggest take her back to the shelter, and let their vet have a look.

you might want to get her to the vet, there could be an infection or something going on with her, or it was a bad job or something anyways when bringing a new pet into your lives it is best to take them to the vet with in a week or 2 to get them checked out and get them established at a vet.

Welcome! Welcome back, dear Mikala!!

It's good to know that there isn't a hint of your having been spayed!

It looks as though this is a serious question, and you do appear to have received many serious responses. Experience seems to rule out pregnancy.

Just in case ... can you fly one of the kittens across to me?
