It makes you look smaller because it covers more of your body. Carry a really tiny bag and you will look bigger.

shorter?
sound like an old myth tale
but heavy bags does do more damage to your posture than your height.
it will surely make you slouch
causing increase in stress at your spine
with increase in weight it will cause tension in you inner spine
and compression in the outer, causing pain if not sharp one

with shoulder bags
it might result in slants in your shoulder blades

if you have been in some Asian countryside
you would see these people who carries a bamboo stick on their trap muscle or shoulders with a basket full on each side.
Often you would see, they will bend almost to 90 degrees
this is the result of many years starting when they were young
when their muscle and bones are still developing to their final stage of puberty.

often schoolers have to carry loads of books
thus they buy bigger or larger volume school bags
meaning more weight on the back
but this can be minimize by choosing the correct school bag
you have seen some outback backpacks
they are design to cater the enormous loads
with paddings and two straps horizontally plus the regular vertical straps
the horizontal straps at the bottom and top sets the centre of gravity correctly so you wont have to put too much strain on the back.

but i guess in your case with the shoulder bag, sounds like a trend.

either you have to
keep up with the fashion track
or its your back

It does not actually make you shorter but it can affect your posture so you don't stand as straight so you certainly appear shorter. Wearing a heavy back pack can lead to back and shoulder injuries.

Growing children carrying weight over 15lbs with straps positioned over their shoulders for extended periods of time will affect their lower back and may even arch their posture into a hunch.

Wearing something heavy on your back can not stunt your growth...... but it can absolutely hurt your back.

I have shoulder and back problems. The chiropractor said it was from years of carrying my back pack on my shoulder.
