When you've never met him, don't know that he is real, and he doesn't talk back?
Wouldn't that be like trying to speak to someone halfway around the world?

Again by speaking to someone around the world I meant placing your hands together and speaking to yourself. Do you pick up the phone and talk to god? if so whats the number?

Chit,
You have asked a question here in Y/A. You are getting answers from perhaps around the world. Are they any less real then a relationship with the one who created you?
Actually, I would not expect those who do not have this relationship to really understand it. It is like telling one that has been blind all of their life what a sunset looks like. It is something that has to be experienced. You can experience it right now, by reading the link below and placing your trust in Jesus for full payment for your sin.

Between humans, a personal relationship is one where two people share feelings of love/friendship, etc. For some people, having a relationship with God could be like writing letters to someone you love. When you go to the mail box and read their letter to you, you feel loved. The Bible (or other scripture) is like a letter from God.
The REALLY personal part of one's relationship with God, though will be harder to explain to an atheist in terms that will make any sense. As I saw one atheist write on here recently, who had had his first spiritual experience... he said he just felt a feeling of warmth, peace, and of being home.
People who are full of their own ideas and logic will rarely be "quiet" enough to pay attention to such feelings.

actually you can easily speak to someone halfway around the world. its called a phone. second, when you have a personal relationship with God, he doesnt speak to you like you would speak to another person. He speaks through what i could only describe as a hightened sense of common sense. its kind of like describing the taste of water. its almost impossible.

When you are born again the Holy Spirit comes and lives inside of you as His holy temple. The Holy Spirit, amongst other things is our Guide, our Teacher, our Counsellor and our Comforter. God desires all Christians to be friends to His Spirit who lives in them. When you engage yourself in the spirit you are able to communicate with the Holy Spirit spirit to Spirit. God wants you to speak to and get to know the Holy Spirit inside of you. The Holy Spiritis also omnipresent He is with you all the time not half way around the world. We are all called to be led by the Spirit and be sons of God (Rom 8:14). We certainly can have a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit in us.

We all need a relationship with God. It really is the only path to happiness, as we are part and parcel of Him. We are spiritual in essence, so material things will not satisfy us, because we need spiritual food to be satisfied. God is a lot closer than you think, he is within everyone's hearts, and all we need to do is turn to him, and gradually we will hear him more and more. If you really turn to God within your heart he will guide you in your life. God is a person and just because we can't see him with our material eyes does not mean he does not exist. As we become more purified in our consciousness through different processes, we see God more and more.

Because this is what our nature is as the nature of the soul - to have a personal relationship with God. It is just like children have personal relationship with their father. If you analize, the only thing everyone's seeking is love - to love and to be loved. Because that is our original position - to love God and to experience His love. That is how we were created, and we cannot really live without love, just like fish cannot live without water. If you want to love someone, you have to have a personal relationship with the object of your love. Like you rightfully mentioned, we cannot love someone who lives on the other side of the planet, and to whom we never spoke, and about whom we haven't learned anything. That's why it is important to develop this personal relationship - to rekindle our dormant love of God. Now, how to do it is another extensive topic. Ask me if you're interested :)
