Good runners: Lets put it this way.
1) How many of them do you see on the road each day? Remember that Ghia's and Buses have the same engine and general drive train.
2) All of them are at least 25 years old.
3) Comparatively, how many other cars do you see that are over 25 years old?
The engines are easy to maintain and, if you keep the oil changed on a bi-monthly basis will just keep on running (and running and running).
Noisy: The stock muffler is a bit on the noisy side, but you can purchase other types of exhaust systems that will quiet them down. But.. they are not THAT loud in the first place
Check eBay to get an idea of the value on these things. If you are looking to buy one you should note that the value of these things is going UP..not down.

Yes they are good runners if you change the oil, adjust the valves and keep the belts adjusted correctly. They are kind of noisy but if you use stock exhaust and not headers that will help. In my 356 Porsche I have put in a new carpet kit but 1st I used the carpet kit as a pattern to install jute padding for sound silencer. In the "way-back" behind the back seat I use a sound deadening material against the bare metal next to the engine, then the jute padding then the carpet using good contact cement. I also use said material under the rear seat where the battery is, the headliner, and under all the door panels, (be sure the window can roll up and down).

If you get a good one it may be a good runner - at the end of the day it will be old, but they were built to last. However, there are good and bad ones... As for noisy - yes! Isn't that the whole point of a beetle?

Mine is a '72 and runs good. Not that great but GOOD. Not bad for a car that alrady made miles while i was still sucking on my pacifier. Loud? Yep, it sure is. Part of its mystique, maybe (the same way a Harley Davidson is supposed to be loud, maybe). But a proper muffler would tune it down a bit. Sometime ago, my loud VW Bug just activated all car alarms while i passed them by in the parking lot. I was out of the parking lot in no time

oh, gas mileage? about 29 to 30 mpg. depends on your driving. yes, the beetle is or was a great little car. it had a personality of its own. i fell in love with them. so much so, i got involved in building engines and general repairs, and used sales. i called my place,[THE BUG FARM]. i lived in the country, hence THE FARM. loved them. i preferred the 1970 engine myself. noisy? some, but i liked to hear it. and it was quicker from a standstill then others are saying. if you buy one, look it over GOOD. i would stay away from the super beetle. has some steering problems. and as far as the ghia and bus having the same engine,???? i must have missed something somewhere. never saw one. but buy one and enjoy.

it all depends.
they are very loud.
if you know how to work on cars, and you buy one that is in good shape then yes, they are fairly simple to keep alive, and will run pretty good with just general maintenance. if you get one in poor shape to begin with it will be a nightmare.
71 is probably about the best year for the motors. they have breaker points, but the ignition system can be upgraded with a kit. try to sfind a car that is fairly stock, with a stock solex carburator, the upgraded ones with fancy engines and webbers are usually someone's "wet dream" of a hot rod and the only reason they are selling it is because it was more than they can handle and they are tired of trying to make it run right.
the cars are not very fast, or very quick, or very powerful and compared to todays cars they are not very fuel efficient.
but if in decent shape, and maintained well are very dependable
try to stay away from the one's from the late 70's with fuel injection, it is not like the fuel injection of today and very few shops have the equipment to work on them, and most have been converted to carburators, wich is not legal if you live somewhere that requires emmisions testing.

i have a 71 with a zoom tube exhaust. it's noisy because i like it that way. sounds like a like motorcycle, kinda. good runner? let me say it this way... top speed is about 80-85. however, my engine has 350 THOUSAND miles on it. yeah, i would say it's pretty reliable. change the oil, adjust the valves every 3,000 or so, and you'll be cool. also, don't buy one unless you get the book by richard muir on how to keep your VW alive. it is better than sex when it comes to maintaining your air cooled veedub.
also i agree with the other guy... carburated engine is easier to maintain than 'fuel injected'.

Older bugs are great cars, because they are so simple.
Yes the car is very noisy, not a very good seal in the "cabin" portion of the car.
Sometimes they cheap on craigslist.org

We have a '71, it's runs great now that we put a new engine and transmission in it. Yes ours is pretty damn loud. I'm not sure if there is a way to limit the noise.
